I can't start my Valkyrie in gear.
I have cleaned  the contacts in the clutch switch, tried to start with the switch bypassed ( the two plug in cables connected), but nothing works.

Can anyone help?

Can you wiggle the end of your clutch lever up and down more than a couple of millimetres?  If so, replace your clutch lever.  The worn out pivot hole in the lever prevents the lever from depressing the clutch switch.  I don't know why jumpering the switch didn't help.  Perhaps it's a normally closed switch?

Gryphon rider, the lever activates the switch, and I have also tried to activate it by hand. No go either way Sad

Tank_post, I will try to find the right connection in the headlight and clean it.

Thanks guys  cooldude

Another component in the circuit (and possible culprit) is the side stand switch.

By the way, when everything is all right around this switch, should I be able to find 12v (+) on either of the plug in  cables, or do they simply connect ground (-).
I hope you know what I mean  Embarrassed

The side stand switch works. The warning light is OK, and it won't start with the side stand down.
So it should be ok, right?

I would advise you to not get into that habit to begin with. I know a lot of riders do it, I'm not one of them. I've seen a few cases over the years of riders taking out everything in front of them because at that moment, the clutch master cylinder failed. Remember Murphy's Law: If something is going to go wrong, it will happen at the most inopportune time.

Yes, you are right John, and I also just discovered the problem the other day, because I killed her at a stoplight, and the jerk behind me honk his horn, because it took me a while to put her in neutral and start again.
In these cases it could be nice to just pull the clutch and start again.
Do you agree?

Yes, I agree in those instances. Isn't it strange how someone behind you gets all in a huff because you cost them 10 seconds out of their life? Years ago I actually had some jerk bump me in back as soon as the light turned green, then yell at me for being so slow to get moving. The bike was running, I just didn't react as quick as he thought I should have. I told him if he bumps me again, I'll be riding a new bike AND driving his pickup. He backed off then.

Yes, that kind of logic make sence for even the biggest jerk. I visited New York some years ago, and a guy told me, that a nano second was the time  between the light turning green and the taxi behind you honks his horn  Cheesy
By the way, i have visited Orlando a coupple of times, and i envy you the weatherconditions to ride overthere. I bet you have a lot of sun og heat right now.
I'm looking forward to 5 month of rain, snow and gray cold weather Evil

If someone bumped my cycle from behind,  I'd be getting his license plate number and calling 911 to get the cops involved.  Jerks like that don't belong on the road and deserve to get taken to the cleaners.  If he talked back, I'd be kicking his ass.

This summer had for the first time unable to start in 1st gear as well with kickstand up and totally dead when hit starter button.  Has not happened again so hopefully was a fluke???  Week before that had the headlight go out split second after starting bike and hasn't had that problem again either, both only once.  Weird how things like that happen?  Hope a 3rd issue doesn't come about like a dead battery stranding me away from home.

For one thing I suggest to do some starter switch maintenance.

What you report is most always starter switch related.

+1 on that, and while doing that I'd install the relay in the headlight bucket to remove the heavy current from the start switch contacts. Click on the link and scroll about halfway down to the "Safeguard" section. An easy project and good insurance.

 crazy2 2funny uglystupid2 laugh
Problem solved!
When I tried the clutch switch, the side stand was down.
With side stand down I can start in neutral, but not i 1. gear with clutch drawn in.
To day I killed it again crazy2, and tried to start in gear. No problems, because this time the side stand was up!

Thanks guys for your help and suggestions.
