I changed oil in the Tourer last night, got everything buttoned up (I thought), took a ride to the nearest station for gas. A couple miles down the road, noticed a burning oil smell and immediately thought it couldn't be my bike, must be the vehicle behind me. Started off from the stop sign and saw oil shooting out the side of the bike, no filler cap. I pulled over, called my wife to no avail but remembered I had shop towels in the bag, twisted the end and plugged the hole. I rode gently for 2 miles back home and added a quart only to check the level and too much oil. I had to throw my pants away, they had more oil on them than was in the engine.

If you are riding and it is a must that you keep your eyes on the road, you are riding too fast.

Thanks for starting my day with a full on belly laugh, Eli! Reminds me of the time I poured several quarts into a truck before realizing I hadn't replaced the drain plug. The new oil went straight through to the drain pan, into the old oil, overflowing the drain pan, and leaving me not enough new oil left to feel good about driving the truck to the store to get more new oil... What a day!

Eli, you have the 2nd best oil changing story now. The 1st remains our old buddy BitShifter, who changed the oil in his Valk and soon afterwards lost power in the engine, running so poorly to the extent he bought another engine to replace the bad one. When they drained the old engine's oil as part of the removal process, almost 8 quarts came out of the engine. Hmmmmm. So then they refilled it with 4 quarts just to see what would happen and viola! the "bad" engine ran just fine. Seems he forgot he had replaced the oil during the change and did it again.
From that point, his handle changed from BitShifter to DipStick.
Not sure if he ever sold that replacement engine.

Feelin better the more I read !! After pulling carbs bowls to clean slo jets, I suddenly recalled , in bed , that I didn't remember tightening the screws on the boots to the ports. This was after a 30 mile ride !!! Two nuts had vibrated off, so was an easy fix. Lucky me ! Mo PS thnks for sharing Red D ,, glad no harm done !!!

I hope it's okay for a foreigner to comment on this Texas site. After reading Red Diamonds story I have to share this. I made almost the same fault once, with the only difference that I had put on the filler cap, but had not tightened it. So besides the same experience as yours, Red Diamond, I had to walk half a mile back to find the cursed thing Take care Allan

Thanks Chuck Well apart from the walk it was quite easy. Blacktop Road with low cut grass (is that the right term??) along the side. I visited Texas 2 years ago. Great place! Nice place to ride, unfortunately we were in a car. Although it was an American V8 car, I would have liked to ride my Valkyrie instead. Thanks again Allan

I almost didn't post this story, as I felt silly for forgetting things I should have remembered, but wait awhile and a lot of others will start to forget what they originally thought about a minute ago. Glad everyone got a laugh out of it, makes my forgetness feel a lot better. You don't want to hear what I was thinking when I saw all that oil.
Welcome Allan, I'm sure others as well as I, are happy to know our comments are read by fellow Valkyrie riders all over the world. Keep your comments coming.

Thanks Red Diamond! I feel like I am a member of a great family. Imagine my surprise first time I had a problem, and a little scary I wrote a question on the VRCC tech site. Half an hour later I had a lot of answers from al over the USA, and the problem was gone. On evening i tried to join the chat room, and a lot of guys wished me welcome. After that experience I went to bed glad and humble. I'm looking forward to much more correspondence with you guys
