So as not to hijack anyone elses thread,  I will need to replace the pinion cup/drive shaft on my '99 I/s (76K miles) in the next year or so.  Not sure how to loosen the nut holding the cup.

I do most of my own work on the Valk and do have a good assortment of tools.  But don't have an air/electric impact wrench.   What else can I use, OR do I need to take the rear to a shop to have it removed?

New project new tool is my moto. If you have an air compressor I recommend you buy that air impact wrench as you may spend that much having a shop remove it for you. I bought one just to remove the flywheel nut off an 1100 Virago. Now I use it all the time when doing my own auto and truck work.

There are threads here where some folks just used a pipe wrench to hold the pinion cup. Good luck.

I just ordered the special tools... we'll see how that goes...

 1    07924-ME40010    PINION HOLD PL 38X42

 1    07924-ME40020    COLLAR SET C

Gearhead.com...

The other part we wear out so often is officially the "Ring Gear"... I think you unbolt the
case and press the Ring Gear out using a Honda "Attachment" (Round piece that
is the right size) with your shop press...

You don't need these special tools, but my experience when using the special
tools for some other things (steering head, swingarm bearings) is that they make
the job easy-peasy...

I have the final drive that came on my bike... worn out Ring Gear.

I have my buddy Henry's old final drive... worn out Ring Gear.

I have the final drive I got from pinwall when I got my bike to replace the worn
one that was on there... worn out pinion cup...

Only tools needed to remove the ring gear is a pair of screw drivers, put one on each side of the gear and push, it comes right out of the housing, same for the ring gear bearing.  Only one that requires special tools in the pinion gear, I have a set of tools that I made in the shop for them.

The manual sez it might stay in the housing and need pressing out, and they list the
attachment to use... I've never done it of course, and you have...

The bidness about pressing out the splines so you can rob them from 1500 wing sounds
pretty interesting too... you did that as well?

I Have done a couple sets now, 1500 wing is the same spline.  A lot cheaper than replacing the ring gear assembly.
