Always on except during the long winter here and then it was off. But lots of fuel went throught it over it's age. I'd say mine just flat wore out.

Mine failed after what I would call a reasonable amount of time. Its a '97 and it failed on the way to Daytona in like 2007 so it lasted 10 years. Thats longer than that thing should have lived....it was a year after I did the cover set thing. I did use it, turned it off each night, not everytime the key was off. However, I felt that item was the worst designed and made part on the bike even before I owned a Valkyrie. Its just a crappy part. I would advise anyone that even thinks they are having trouble with theirs to replace it.

I'm not even having problems with mine (original OEM on a '99), but I'm replacing it this winter with a Golan.

+1 on the Golan, I like mine, and no problem since I replaced mine, I also used a pingel inline filter. Great.

What was the part number of the Golan you ordered and is the reserve the same as OEM?

2000 Tourer here bought new. The valve was always ON. The first one lasted 10 years, the second lasted one year. I am 4 months into the third. I have heard that the diaphram material has been changed and not as reliable as the older material.... I read that here I think....or a different site...dont recall. As a result I now turn the valve OFF everything I turn the key off. However, I sometimes forget to turn the valve ON when I turn the key ON...then run out of gas..DOH!

99 I/S rebuilt in 2009, 2000 STD, rebuilt in 2010 with genuine Honda cover set for 10 year preventive maintenance. Turned off every night, but not during stops when out riding.

'00 Tourer - Acquired two years ago. Never turned off valve, let it sit for two months and experienced hydrolock next time I went to start it. Replaced with new stock petcock, am overhauling carbs now and waiting for Dan-Marc valve. Also will be installing in-line filter. I don't think this one was used much before I got it and the build up of varnish was already started. And I don't think the particulates that infected the petcock and carburetors would have been cleared out with Seafoam.
'01 Standard - Acquired seven years ago. Never turned off valve, never sat idle for more than a couple of weeks. Am now turning valve off every time I park it. It'll get an overhaul this winter.
In both cases, I can't remember using reserve - never let it get that low. Well, maybe once on the '01.
Somewhere there's a drawing of the internals of the petcock. If I remember correctly, fuel never touches the diaphram, which is activated by vaccuum from #6 carb. But if the o-ring inside goes bad, then the trouble starts. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

+1 Chris and I are on da same wavelenght. I fought it trying to keep the bike original but gave up and dumped the original petcock(s) and their inherent problems. All that stupid stuff is now in my rear view mirror. Read Pingel.
