I was scheduled to make that ride, savings up money and vacation time for it, and then the wife got pregnant... Was gonna go anyway, but then it turned out she was carrying a litter (Triplets), and my planned trip happened to be the month they most likely would be born... Figuring if I went ahead with the trip that would take me off of the short list for "Father of the Year" I had to scrub the trip, that year...

But it's on the short version of my Bucket List... I WILL ride to Deadhorse one day...

the road to alaska is paved.........MOSTLY

 be prepared for 20-30 mile strecthes of gravel with and with out pilot vechiles

 the haul road from fairbanks north is a different matter

 no pavement tp speak of, gravel, mud, rocks, calcium chloride {chlorite ?} ,holes the size of basket
 balls, mosquitos that would quickly kill an unprotected person {dont laugh till you have been there}

 the only hotel up that way {that i saw} is in coldfoot and that starts at 195 a night

 2-3 miles north of that is a campground that is 7 dollars a night, i had a hundred mosquitos in my
 tent before i had it all ready to go......both nights

 i did not see a single 18 wheeler on the haul road...........but those 28 and 32 wheelers passing you
 at 75 mph on dirt with pucker things up

 so yeah it can be done but it was one of the hardest things ive ever done on a bike

 dan

 look up the schafer trail in the canyon lands of utah if your balls are too big to fit thru the door
 {for a street bike anyway}

Don't take this as a negative or smart-aleck reply but I don't get it. To each his own, but my question would be "WHY?" Sounds like it wasn't much fun. Guess you must like a challenge. Anyway, if it made you feel good about yourself for doing it, then I am happy for you.

Same reason people climb mountains... Because it's there.

A challenge can be VERY enjoyable to overcome.

There is a certain joy in a short commute ride.

There is also a certain joy in a grueling exhausting ride to the ends of the earth.

And I WILL do that ride some day...

I bet the scenery was totally awesome and worth all the bad road/driving conditions.

Glad you made the trip and made you happy!  Might as well get some enjoyment out of our lives once in awhile.

My hat is off to you Dan that is one bodacious ride you took, 22000 miles if I recall

Hope to share some wind with you next year.

Ride what you want and where you want to go as long as you  have the health to enjoy it.

It dont matter how fast you ride or what you ride as long as you get there safely and had fun

Your picture by the Arctic Circle sign is priceless!   What a great ride that must have been, I am officially jealous.  I keep saying "someday" so I am not giving up hope.

You may still have time.  My father-in-law has a similar picture of himself at the Circle sign.  He went the summer before his 80th birthday. He said he wanted to take the trip before he got "too old" to make it.  He's currently 88 and still riding.

that's just got to be an awesome trip.    I've always wanted to do that.   So glad you got to do it.    I know a lady that has done the trip on her bmw.   She also said it was a tough trip.....and this lady knows tough trips.   She holds bunches of IBA certificates.   She said the gravel just ate her lunch.   Went down at slow speed twice.  She  recommended not going on a good motorcycle as it will be dinged up pretty bad from flying rock time you get back.  I'd still like to try it but just don't know that it's in my near future.  I'm jealous but glad you got to go.

Oh, and if you're interested in Valkyries going places Valkyries really shouldn't be going, you've gotta check this guy's site out... it's mostly in Japanese, but enough is in English to get the idea, and lots of pictures... And yeah, I'm jealous of his adventure!

http://www.baikunomatsuo.sakura.ne.jp/indexe.html

And yeah, he rode his Valk to Dead Horse...

But also to places like Mt. Everest base camp!

The Great Pyramids in Egypt

Uluru/Ayers Rock in Australia:

Anyway, you get the idea...

I wonder if you can put a set of off road tires on a Valk. Looks like you could have used them. That would be cool big ass nobbies on a 800 lb bike.
Good for you did you make the trip solo?
