I've been looking for the right Valkyrie for a long time. Two weeks ago I got a pristine 99 black tourer with 25,000 miles. I'm not new to motorcycling, been riding 40 years, had many bikes, Honda 90 thru KZ1300. Aways have done my own maintenance. I've read this fourm for weeks anticipating my fat girls arrival. I've already changed out the rear end with Mobil 1 75w90, new non silica anti freeze with distilled water, drained the air box hose added sea foam to new fuel and after reading many many question about oil went with mobil 1 15w50 auto oil and a new napa gold (wix) filter. My two Questions are these. I want to know if I got got the right Mobil 1 that is talked about in this fourm. I read silver bottle red cap,blue cap,gold cap, tutti frutti cap, AAAAHHHHH. Any way the one I used I bought at my small town Colorado Auto Zone, Silver Bottle Silver cap Mobil 1 15w50 auto synthetic. WILL THIS HURT MY CLUTCH OR MOTOR ? Also after reading so many complaints about the petcock, (by the way mine seems to work fine) It seems this is a time bomb waiting to leave me stranded at any time. I read Golan, or Pingle but no one seems to like one over the other, I don't mind spending the money on one I just want the best non vacuum one. Thanks for your help in advance, I'm sure I'll ask for more advise in the future.

Welcome aboard. I can't really comment on the Mobil ! as I use Amsoil products in mine. It is my understanding that any oil that has no Friction Modifiers listed will be OK. Come to think of it, I can't help with the petcock thing either, I'm still running the OEM. I do have a rebuild kit on hand if I need it, and turn off my petcock when I turn off the bike. SO, basically, I'm just saying hi and welcome.

anytime you are choosing an oil for the Valkyrie......look on the back of the jug.  the circular seal with tech data in it.  If at the bottom ist is blank=GOOD.  If at the bottom it says energy conserving=BAD

Mobil 1 15/50 synthetic. And welcome to the insanity. I have a 99 I/S with the stock petcock and a cover(rebuild kit)set in the tool box. Little over 67 thou on my I/S. These damn things we ride are durn near bullet proof WITH a little maintainence now and then. Again-welcome and RIDE SAFE.

Have 156k on my interstate been running mobil 1 15w50 for the last 95k of that and I'm still running the orginal clutch. Converted the stock petcock to a manual one over 5 yrs ago and still no problems. Welcome and enjoy the ride.

Hello, I replaced the OEM petcock with a Golan, and inline Pingel filter and have had zero problems since these modifications.  I feel now I can trust this motorcycle to take me anywhere. My 2001 Standard now has about 17k on it. Enjoy.

More than a decade after their production and 10's of thousands of miles, the Valkyrie is still one of the most trouble-free, bullet proof, superior performing and wickedly designed motorcycles on the road today.

I don't consider that an opinion. It's a fact.

With proper maintenance, problems are rare. However, what rare problems there are tend to follow common themes. Petcock, Hydrolock, Spline issues, Wheel bearings and Shock bushings. Some of the issues come with specific symptoms and you can stay ahead of some things during proper maintenance.

And we've got this spectacular source of technical information about all things Valkyrie.

What's not to love?

As far as the petcock......if you are not familuare with HYDROLOCK .....you really need to research it....it's sortta like when something terrible happens to someone else but never a thought of it happening to you....As in my case......then you can make your own educated choice as to petcock....as in my case ......except I researched & then procrastnated....not that the petcock will totatly prevent it....but it's a factor in the equation

Hey neighbor.  Running M1 15-50 grey cap is good, for over 100k original clutch no oil problems.  Installed dan-marc to prevent hydrolock - while I was at it I wired it with a relay "latch" and hidden sw for anti-hijack fuel disabler.  See my tech page at http://www.horseapple.com/Valkyrie/Tech_Tips/Fuel_Shutoff/fuel_shutoff.html  Sounds crazy but for me it's Chromatherapy to tinker on the bike - besides someone pointed us to a site here recently that said the most stolen bike brand now is Honda - the least, HARLEY!  Go figure.

I've replaced my wheel bearings and u-joint once.  Front shock seals once.  Have installed Progressive air shocks in back a decade ago, so no back shock issues.  I have used my Valk for hunting deer, have killed two nice muley bucks now.  Went to Evans waterless permanent coolant earlier ths year, so I'm done with any cooling issues.  I once had to replace the water pump after I screwed up and used silicon coolant.  No other repair issues I can recall...

Welcome aboard! If your interested in proper maintenance I'd be all over that rear wheel- spline issue. Particularly if the previous owner didn't address that in his maintenance logs. Yes the petcock can be a problem, and I really fought my battles with the original equipment. But the rear wheel splines could be dry or rusty and you not know it. I'm mentioning this because you said you can do your own work. If you read up on the procedure here and get the parts; O rings, thrust washer, and proper spine lube you should be able to handle it. It's not rocket science. And there may be folks in your area that can lend a hand, which is not uncommon among this group. If not dealt with it could cost you some jack. This suggestion is not to alarm you as there are plenty of valks that are running and not have done this PM. The "Shop talk" section has a lot of good info well sorted out over time.  G/L !

Here are some pics of the area involved;
