been doing some service on a friends valk, and was preparing to load on the trailer to take back to him. Well, turned on gas and hit starter button and it just clicked, hit start button again and just click, then for a couple of times it tried to turn over. But then I noticed gas running out of the weep hole in the left exhaust can, is that likely a bad diaphram in the petcock?

thanks

Yes, should cost about $30 to $50 to rebuild the petcock.

Hope the multiple button clicks don't cost an extra $1000  Shocked

Sounds like something like this caused gas to run down to #6 vacuum hose...

I suspect hydro-lock.  Pull the plugs and remove the front crank cover to crank by hand.

Thanks guys,
There wasn't a loud "clang" of internals, so am thinking that ok.
I have a cover set already that was going to put on mine, so will use on his.
Yes, will remove the plugs and hand turn it over.
Just hate to take this gas tank off again, oh well.

thanks again,
Ken

What's wrong with removing the plugs and turning it over with the starter?

nothing, as long as the spark plug holes are covered with a few rags to prevent gas from shooting all over the garage...

Why not just put it in gear & push it backwards. If there's any fuel in the cylinders it should just flow out of the exhaust pipes, right ?

Be sure and let it dry out some or you might see why they refer to her as the dragon lady.  2funny

It doesn't sound like a fuel-lock,, but,, its easy enough to pull ALL the sparklers and give the engine a spin just in case..
The problem sounds like a classic case of the dirty starter switch.. Shop talk has an article on cleaning it..

Didn't find a hole in the diaphram, but it did appear to be mis-shaped, so that may have let gas flow back into #6 cyl. Put on the new cover set and tested it out while tank was off the bike. Pulled the spark plugs, rolled bike outside and hit the start button, gas spewed out of cyl.
Let it sit open for a day for additional evaporation, put tank back on, spark plugs re-installed and fired it off....the ole gal roared back to life! All is good except for the coolant leak now, gggrrrrrrrr!
I'll be glad to get his baby back to him, been in my shop since Sept 5.
Up to $1,284 in parts, $1,3** in cheap labor. Thanks guys for the tips and information. All the good stuff I have learned about this wonderful machine has come from right here on this site!
By the way, the bike is a '97 purple and white.
