I looked with horror at the final drive thread about splines that had destroyed themselves, so I went to Shop Talk to look how to service the drive assembly. I am abit confused about using a moly grease as well as another grease as well to lube the spline assembly. Is there a combination grease or does 1 go in first and then the other on top of the first? Moly(Guard Dog) and Lucas grease.

Me personally I just use grease, Valvoline, on all my parts. I have used paste before but this grease has been fine my last 50k miles. 77k on it now and it looks like new. Well I think it does, wont know till spring maybe.

You can use Guard Dog Moly paste, or the Lucas grease or Belray Waterproof.  I like to burnish a little moly paste into freshly cleaned metal (just a tiny bit since the Moly actually goes into the pores of the metal.  THen slather a healthy coating of a good heavy duty waterproof grease over the top of that.

Many just use the water proof grease or just use the guard dog.  I find the moly grease dries out more than the waterproof stuff.

Bottom line the grease itself isint as important as it staying in there.  Water will wash  out a weak grease.

re-doing it every 10K miles or so seems to be the best  insurance.

Hope that helps

Do you have the Honda Service Manual?  Follow the manual's lubrication recommendations (moly paste and grease where specified), replace the 3 o-rings, and use assembly instructions following the rear wheel installation and you will have no worries...

Good luck.

Thanks guys,  this bike is new to me. I'm trying to head off problems. Any advice given is appreciated. It's a 99 with less than 18k, but concerned about age deterioration.

Iffin you know which end of a wrench to hang onto then all you need now is this board and a maintenance manual. You keep that rear end up and you WILL be saving huge $$$$$$ by keeping it up. Normal maint goes a LONG way on our Phatt Ladies. I have a Honda and a Clymer service manual and the fine folks on this board. My Honda dealer is flirting with $70.00 an hour mechanic rates. Dat buys a LOT of gasoline which = more ridin.  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

Hey guys, thanks for the info and the link to the service manuals. This should all help. Now just a few more days to ride would be the checkers.
