As I put my sidestand down one day last week, I noticed it had lots of black specks on it.  Hmmm, wonder what I rode through?

Fast forward to yesterday.  While kneeling to line up the lift to stand up the bike for an oil and filter change, I noticed lots of oily residue on the left side of the bottom of the engine.  Uh oh.  Nope, the filter was well-seated.  So was the oil pressure sensor and everything else.  What could it be???

Danged shifter seal only made it 12 years 7 months and 65,XXX miles...  2funny

You may not be able to repair that seal Brother Dave. With the shortage of Valkyrie parts, you may want to stock up on those seals should you find any. You know how those things wear out, 12 years and 65K miles can go by pretty darn fast. LOL

Obviously, your bumblebee is hopelessly worn out.  I'll bring my trailer over and haul it off for you at no charge, just because you are my friend.

Good point, Eli.  If I can load up on them, maybe I can keep Mark and his trailer away for a while longer.  I just might order in a starter solenoid, too, huh Woody???

Mark, your generosity is mind-numbing!  We can always count you you to be there for us.  Unless it's on a ride to Strawn you organized...

You know I'm teasing, Mark.  Son with car trouble trumps CFS.

Actually, he missed F'burg due to the wrenched back he suffered on a ride while helping move a cast iron bath tub up the stairs to the back porch and into Daniel's mom's house in Clarksville.

That was a ride he probably should have missed, but there he was helping people again.   cooldude

Alright... this crew needs to tighten up!  I will be pulling the wing onto the stand this afternoon to replace the shifter seal on it...  uses the same part as the Valk...

PN# 91206-286-013

$1.89 cents at Cyclemax.  For some reason they seem to be cheaper than HDL... and  I buy alot of wing parts there.  http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche.com/cyclemax/Honda_OEM/HondaMC.asp

I bought two...

and yes... I have a trailer too.

"just might order in a starter solenoid, too, huh Woody???"

Yes I need one (maybe a back up also)

Started her up on Sunday AM, off to Church. Started fine after Church and stopped off at Lowes. Note: when I stopped I was in gear when I put stand down.  Came out of Lowes and had nothing.  No lights, horn no power.  Checked obvious, all was good.  Called Disco, he tells me to check the starter solenoid (manual calls it a relay) I locate and inspect.  Black and green housing is split/cracked in the rear with a little oil/grease ooze.  Wiped off drop of ooze which was warm and assured two housings were connected.  Tried to start and she fired right up and has everytime since.  Won't feel comfortable until I install a new one.. Anyone has that part # handy?

As always -- Thanks Dave.

That s a common problem on the STs. bad connections with age. the part is the same as the valk s. a lot of new and used ones on the bay about one fifth the price of oem. also, remove the wires from the plug, clean ,add a touch of dielectric grease and replug wires to relay minus plug body. cooldude

I am not complaining and was happy to help.  If you live life always being careful, well, you won't live much.

Every ride is a good one to make.  I planned so much of Fredrericksburg that it really bothered me not to go, but that was my choice to heal and not end up in a bad way while out of town.  Speedo planned the ride to Strawn - I just pushed it along.  That's my job as prez, right?

I still have some cleanup to do, but the new seal is installed.  Thanks for the great write-up, Daniel.

Here's the old one at 65,667 miles.

Tools for the project, old seal in parts, new seal in bag.

Mine went at 45kish, shortly after my 2nd fill with the blue jug Rotella. Dunno if they're related, but that's when it went. Saw a little oil on the floor, and thought, "What?? Valkyries don't leak oil!". Came here and searched for "oil on the floor", and the first relevant post pointed to the shifter seal. Hell of a relief to find out it's such a minor/easy fix, ain't it?
