Any tips on mounting a GPS on my Valk?  Appears the brackets are plastic, based on the sites I've looked at.  Anything to concern myself with?

Also, should I get the hard wired adapter to provide power, or just go with battery power when I need it?  I don't do many long distance rides so it would be maybe to find my way home after I've been out exploring...lol.

Any tips on where to mount it based on your experiences?

In my opinion the best mounts are made by RAM. I bought a mount for my Garmin that mounts on the back of the front brake handlebar bracket. they sell every type of mount a man would need. Their web site is user friendly also. As far as connecting the power cord I mounted an aux. power plug to the back of my windshield brkt. and wired it into the headlight bucket. I bought the plug at Advance Auto.

I have been using a RAM mount on the right side of the handle bars. Plugged into the cig lighter. Working that way for 40,000 miles.

I went with TechMount for my Garmin Zumo 660.  I mounted it between risers 2.5 years and 41+K miles ago.  It hasn't budged.

Item 3-30912 at this page: http://www.techmounts.com/products/index.php?page_function=browse_search&mount=bar

Looks like this.

You don't mention the brand of GPS.  If your going to be riding more than 3 hours at a time, I would hardwire it.

I've got a zumo 550 mounted inboard of the clutch reservoir, and it's hardwired in.

If you want you can also change out the riser top cap with two smaller caps and put the gps between the gauges.  A link to a discussion about camera mounts with the part numbers.

I use a Ram mount that replaces one of the handlebar clamp bolts with a longer one with the ball installed.  For me is makes a cleaner appearance when the unit is not installed, which is most of the time.

The minimalist in me likes this method. Should work just fine with a power point placed somewhere in the vicinity.

Where do you pick up the hot wire for a IS hard wire? Is it easier to find one in the faring or bring it from the aux or direct from the battery?

When I wired mine, I came from the battery. Should go through a relay, triggered from the acc. lead behind the side cover. And, make sure you fuse it cooldude

I wasn't looking for anyone to actually find a mount for me that's why I didn't mention the brand. I was just looking for the tips and a lot of good suggestions have been made about how to mount, making sure fuses were involved. And I do appreciate all those. I have a Garmin nĂ¼vi 1450 LMT is what I currently have

1 inch RAM ball that replaces one of the handlebar cap bolts. Then mount the appropriate cradle to hold your Garmin on the ball. This approach puts your device behind the windshield for protection. Also you will need to adjust the device to reduce sun "washout" on the screen for the cheaper Garmins.

Few tips: Try to get it mounted on the handle bars so as to reduce the amount you have to move your head to see it. I suggest mounting it on the right hand side beside the break reservoir. In My case I were prescription progressive glasses and it means I don't have to move my head (simply avert my eyes). Sounds silly, but it's important if you wear progressive prescription lenses. Use a good mount, ideally the 'RAM' mount and hard wire it tho the battery (and intercom if you ride an Interstate). Be careful to leave enough slack in the cabling to accomadate the full turn angle of the handle bars. The other consideration is that the supplied cabling (in my case Garmin 660) is just barely long enough to reach back to beneath the seat where the battery & inetrcom are located (as is the case on my Interstate) . The Garmin 660 (designed for bikers) comes with the RAM mount which is excellent.

My Zumo 220 came with a RAM mount, it sits under the faring gauges in the centre of the handlebar clamp. I power it thru an under the seat fuse panel, powered from the battery with a fused wire and relay triggered by the AUX line. It also powers my Ipod and cig lighter.  I regularly ride 10-12 hours on weekends and my trip East each summer, so battery power is not nearly enough.

RAM all the way, but I really like this handlebar mount.   Much nicer than the RAM U-Bolt...

Nice things cost money...

Here is what I did:

Adhesive hook velcro on GPS unit back
2 "One-wrap" velcro around handle bar mount - I used the 1" stuff
Velcro "cross bar" to keep together better and additional strength

I went 7,000 miles last year with no problem.

I could the GPS unit off in 2 seconds or the whole thing off in 10 seconds, so depending where you stop, it may need to be secured.
