Just bought a set of horns (Dodge van for $10)from the salvage yard and trying to get em wired up. I read the Chet Walters article on installing a relay but I can't tell where to best access the wiring from the horn switch to do the splicing etc. Also wondered about a place to mount 'em. Keep it simple for the electrically impaired! Thanks to whoever can lend a hand. Virgil in Ms.

Build some simple brackets and bolt them on the cross member that the side stand bolts to, under the bike between the pipes. Wire them directly from the battery, with a fused wire, and use the original horn wire to trigger the relay. Battery to relay to horns to ground, with the relay triggered by the original horn positive lets you use the horn button on the bars to set them off.

Thanks for your reply! Do I access the horn hot wire inside the pod where the horn is or can I do that under the seat near the battery?

I just installed a set of air horns on one of my bikes, now all have them.   On all, I ran two wires under the gas tank from the  OEM wiring harness females for the horn, to a relay under the side cover.  That way the OEM horn switch works.   I mounted the compressor under the side cover also.  With the relay close to the battery, all that's needed is a small fused wire to the battery.  I ran the ground to the side cover mounting peg/bolt, scraping the paint off the bolt and frame to get a ground.   I ran the hoses for the horns under the gas tank also cause I mounted the horns on the right top crash bar.

I believe most that have show horns have done the same and someone figured this out 10+ years ago.  Stills works fine on the one I did way back then.

The wiring between the horn button and the horn never makes it back near the seat.

I installed two horns inside my fairing and used the original horn wire (which runs to the OEM horn below the radiator) to trigger a relay. Works great for me!

I mounted the new relay on the side of the radiator bracket inside the right pod. I cut the factory connectors off the wires that went to the original horn and spliced some spade connectors on them. One is 12 volts when you hit the horn button and the other is ground. They slide right on the new relay and trigger it. I forget off hand which terminals they go on. The other two heavy red wires.....One goes to the battery (thru a fuse) and the other to the new horns. I put my new Chrome HF horns in the pods. One on each side.
Here are a couple pics. Sorry the relay one is blurry.

Where did you get the front rotor cover?   Looks good cooldude

Thanks.

VMB;  I have the wiring diagram that came with the set of horns. If you can use it, I'll post it here for you.

Virgil, Glad you got it figured out.

Bill, They came to me with the bike. So I'm not sure what they are. I don't think they are available anymore. They might even be for a different application like a Goldwing or something. The one on the left side looks like it was cut/modified to work with the speedo gear. The bike also had those big caliper covers on it, but I didn't put them back on cause they need re-plated.
Here is a link to a set that sold on e-bay. They are Rivco brand. Might be the same as mine. Not sure.

Those were made for a standard/tourer. I looked at some a while back and noted that, because of the IS speedo gear, a chunk would need to be cut out. They do look sharp!
