I am trolling for tires on line , why is it so difficult to receive date of manufacture for tires The motorcycle superstore says if do not like the tires send them back ,wouldn't it be easier if someone just gave the info to the customer Terry

Because like all the other online stores to, they are sitting in one of several warehouse's somewhere across the country. I wouldn't worry to much about the DOM no ones going to sell a very old tire I don't think. I've never got a old tire sent to me.

I agree with westsider... I've seen some old tires that would fit our bikes in some bike shops that don't sell many tires like that, but these popular Internet parts sites probably just got them, or get them fresh when you order them from a high-volume supplier like Parts Unlimited or something...

Just received an E3/front & Commander ll rear (180-65-16) for my Wing from MS Superstore and they are both dated (2412). Like to try the Commander on my Valk but haven't checked the size difference yet.

Thanks Hoser, appreciate it.. I personally like the E3's but the Commander ll has about twice the tread depth....that will probably be the next rear on my Valk

I ordered a tire on 10/24/07 and received a tire manufactured in March 2003, over 4½ years old. In all fairness, it was listed as a closeout and I knew it was discontinued. Received a new tire for Christmas this year, so the 2003 will get changed this spring.

Man, what kind of tire was it? Mine are always worn out within a year, wearing out two sets per year in fact.

It's not an e-3, it is a bias ply tire, made to replace the oem tire on the big Harleys, it's good for 20,000. The worn tire in the pic I replaced had 20k on it. New one has 11K on it now. Hoser

Denny; it isn't the years that wear a tire, it's the miles. Some of us ride well in excess of 10K per year, some ride less than 5. The D404 bias rear on the front of my IS has over 21K on it at the moment... Fred.

Not sure if your comment was directed to me, but if it was: The tire was a Dunlop bias ply K491 Elite II MT90HB17 Rear Tire (mounted on the front). I don't ride that many miles per year. After 20,000 miles, the tire looks like this: Lots of miles to go, but I'll replace it due to age. I certainly don't ride enough to go through two sets per year. My hat's off to you.

You are right vanagon40, still looks fair, I have been getting maybe 12,000 on a tire and would feel pretty good to get 20,000. I agree that it is not good to run a tire that old, as we all know, the rubber deteriorates, like us, with age. Of course we have quite a few 100+ days of heat here too and that doesn't help mileage.

Hey Denny, Like you say, we may or may or may not have to worry about miles and age. Unlike you, I ride only about 4,000 to 5,000 miles per year. I'm sure I would have a different opinion if I rode 24,000 miles a year like you.

I had a Dunlap E-3 given to me for front (150-80R17).
Problem is Date stamp of 07 - over 5 years old.
Hesitant on using - No cracks of dry rotting.
What do you think ????

Use it. Even if it don't last, it's free. If it has never been on a bike you probly won't have any problems. Probly won't anyway. If you don't want it pm me. Hoser

I think the issue is what you can't see with a tire five years old ,this web site says there are safety issues blowouts at speed etc---are you saying we shouldn't worry about dates of manufacture ?

I worry about the dates of manufacture. BUT I have run one in the past with no problems. I checked the air pressure often and looked at the tread & sidewall closely for cracks or signs of aging. Never saw anything but I know there could be hidden trouble. Tires deteriorate with age.
