Thanks for the info. I found a 32mm socket at work tonight and after a little more searching found a 6pt. 1 1/4 socket too. Tomorrow I'll get to try out my new air wrench (Christmas present) and see if I can dismantle my clutch basket. I order all the parts tonight as the 10% off sale ends at midnight eastern time. Saved me about 27 bucks and also got free shipping.

Hey Mr B, when you pull the clutch assembly and re-assemble it, you can use a clutch basket to align the plates. Jimmy and HotGlue used a straight edge, but a basket makes it exact. I am in the process of tearing town the engine I removed from the rescue bike, if you need an extra basket you can use this one to stack the plates. No need to remove yours.

Eli, I just may have to take you up on that. I looked in the manual and I'm thinking of stacking it up in the outer basket while it is still in the bike. Then sliding it out intact and taking it to the brench to compress and put the snap ring back in. If I'm careful I think it just might work.

I thought I had lost the rivets in the damper but there is none in the bottom of the clutch housing so I don't know. It gave all the classic signs of rivet lose, but if they're in there they"re still in the basket. I'll know by tomorrow afternoon. Bike has 160,000 on it and you know how I baby it so it maybe just worn out. Wink Wink

Definitely get the basket from Eli.  Me and Eli had to keep removing the clutch pack and make adjustments, then put it back in.  We finally got it close, but not all the way in.  I took a small hammer and punch and aligned the plates that were crooked.  It was a team effort and we got 'er done.
The basket would make it MUCH easier.

Good idea Eli.

Well finally got arround to getting the clutch nut off and the basket broke down. It was the rivets in the damper plate only had two left in tact. The rest were still in the basket between the fiction dics. No damage done to either the outer drum or the inner drum so just waiting on parts now. I did learn a lesson tho. get good grade snap ring pliers to do this job. I bought so mulit tip ones from autozone and they were a piece of sh#t. I bought some fixed tip ring plier today at O'reillys and they worked much better. cooldude

Should have told you about that.  HG had to mojify a pair he had with a grinder to make them work on mine.  Stiff little buggers.
Did you get the basket from Mr. Eli?  It will help with the alignment going back in.

Good luck Bubbles.

I'll try to have that basket in his hands by Monday Jimmy. Since it has been raining, I've been installing the replacement engine in the rescue bike. I got to start it up tonight and must say I am really please with it. Don't worry Mr B, it is coming.

Man, you work fast Eli!  You haven't had that project bike very long and you already have it fired up...  Guess with all of the rain, you have had lots of time to work on it.  I sure am looking forward to riding to work in the morning...

Good luck to you both.

Hope you get to ride to work Jimmy, it's a nice looking day out. Took the rescue out for a test ride today, this is the best running Valkyrie I have. LOL. It's a '97 Made in The USA in an 03 frame and sounds solid as a rock. I'm running Marvel Mystery oil in the crank and Lucas in the tank right now, I'll change to Mobil 15-50 later. Enjoy your ride.

I always heard that those 97's were the fastest.  I might have to get me a red and white one of these days.  Smiley  I guess you didn't make any adjustments, just swapped the engines?  WOW!

I did install a new set of timing belts Jimmy, but that is about all. I checked the valve clearances and no adjustments were needed. The clutch feels good and the engine sounds like a fairly low mileage engine, not a tick in it.

I got lucky Dennis, my next door job was rained out and I had to do something, otherwise my wife would have ask me to go to the casino. Blah on that.

Just got clutch parts in the mail today. They just left the box on the front porch and I didn't find them until 5:30pm. If I had known they where there I'ld have that thing running tomorrow. I know some people don't like HDL but I've never had anything but  good luck  using them. I did also find out that Eastside honda in Mont Belveiu will match HDLs prices so that is good to know. Tomorrow starts the rebuild. Smiley Smiley Smiley
