Hello to all. Been lurking here for a while and I would like yalls opinion on riding a Valk. I have been on a 2003 vtx 1300 for about 4 years, and love the bike, but am looking for something a whole lot smoother. I have not ridden a Valk, but have been told it is smooth as silk, similiar to a Goldwing. That's what I am looking for as I love the look of the solo Valk and am not ready for the wing look. Any thoughts you guys would like to share? Was wondering if there are any x vtx riders here who can tell me what to expect as far as handling and comfort that differs from the x.....

Thanks for your thoughts

I 've had mine 2 years; I doubt I'll ever ride anything else.
The look and the sound turns a lot of heads ... and, going from a V-Twin to a Flat-Six - HANG ON!!!

I still have my 03 VTX 1300S. I was planning on selling it to help pay for the Valk but am having trouble parting with it even though it gets ridden very little. I just had it repainted for the wife and it looks great but she has decided on a Fat Boy instead.

1st     The biggest difference you will notice is POWER!!!  and lots of it.

2nd     The second thing you will notice is the LOOKS!!! Everyone loves the look and wants to know what it is.  I rode in
the Joe Cain day parade with about 1000+ other bikes.  Most were HD's  with the loud pipes but I could hear
people  in the crowd and the other bikers as well asking what it was I was driving and remarks like....

My goodness Martha; that thing has SIX Cylinders, &
... That thing is a Honda?
         ...Can you believe that ?
         ...WOW!!

3rd.     Handling is heavier but very do-able.

4th.     Much more stable on the interstates and the twisties alike.

5th.    Did I mention the WOW factor?

6th.    She is a thirsty monster if you like to twist the throttle.  But what the heck, we didn't buy her for economy now did we?

7th.     You're VTX will feel very light weight, and under powered  after riding this for a while.

Tom

When I was looking to add a bike that was better for the long haul than my 1984 V65 Magna, I looked a few bikes, including the Goldwing. The Wing was more then I wanted for around town and the others just didn’t feel right. I looked around and found a nice 1998 Valkyrie Tourer and have been very happy with it. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another one if something happened to this one. See if there  is someone in your area that will let you take a ride on their bike. If you are in the Phoenix area, you take mine for a ride.

i have an I/S and 1800R. the valk is a 2000 and the vtx a 2003.
both are good bikes but different.
if i could only have one, the vtx would be gone in a heart beat.

We have friends who ride the VTX 1300 and like them a lot.  We think it is a very good motorcycle.

However, the Valk is, by just about any standard one cares to apply, a great motorcycle.  We have ridden our '99 Standard for about three years now; and our complaints against it are few and minor in nature.  There are gobs of smoooooth power that can be quite addicting.  We can not use the word "nimble" in describing the handling, but the Valk is well behaved on the road and is very stable.  She is comfortable, and her bulk is easily adapted to.

Our main gripe is that these are no longer manufactured, so parts and accessories are becoming more difficult to obtain.  We think this state of affairs will not improve in coming years.

We trudge on.

I went from an '05 VTX 1300R to my '03 Valk Standard.   After riding the Valk home, the VTX got ridden maybe twice during the next year.  I sold it for lack of interest...  When I bought the Valk, I was looking for something different, tried a few Harley's so glad I did not go there....The Valk is the best ride of any.   It is balanced, smooth and eye candy for all.

It's been about a month since I traded my VTX 1300C for my 98 Valk.  It was a hard thing to do, I loved my VTX, and being my first bike, I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for it, but so far this has been a GREAT decision.  I'm still getting used to the weight of the Valk, but it handles just as easily, if not more so, at speed.  It's the slow maneuvers that I still need to practice, but really not bad at all.  As others have said, the power is awesome, and the ride on the highway is outstanding.

One other thing to consider is the riding position, it's a lot more upright/standard than the position on the VTX.  For me it works great and is more comfortable on my back, but I can see where some would like the forward controls a little better.  I've got highway pegs on the crash bar that allow some leg movement too.

Overall, can't complain one bit, she's a beautiful, powerful machine...
