Ya know, I must say......I have literally pulled hundreds of alternators in my day as a part time mechanic.
I have never seen such a dirty piece. Such dust, grime and dust bunnies clogging the vent holes.

Well, someone let it get that way.  I take mine out every 50-60K miles and open it up, check the brushes and blow out the dust.  AND (of course) clean it all nice and purty.

This is the old one just how it came out of the bike...I took out of service at 130K miles because it needed brushes and I didnt want to do it right then, so I put the NIB spare one in

The new one looks the same

Every 10K miles when I pull the rear tire for rear end lube maintenance, I also take off the alt cover(after I have rear end buckled up).
While the bike is running, I use compressed air and blow into the alternator. It cleans out all the dust and stuff. Not sure but it may help it run cooler and last longer.  ???
