2009 Cooper Harbor Dates July 18th-19th

2M I C H

MEET ME IN COPPER HARBOR

RIDE-IN

Sponsored by the Michigan Northern Wolfpack Chapter of the VRCC

WHEN:  JULY 16TH - JULY 19TH , 2009

LODGING:

KING COPPER MOTEL 1-800-833-2470 or 1-906-289-4214

Reserve your rooms now for Friday and Saturday night the 17th and 18th of July.  We've blocked out the remaining 11 (out of 13) rooms on the lakefront.  Our group rate is $80 per night.

There are 20 more units with lake views in the next building.  Our group rate is $70 per night for these.

Mention the Michigan VRCC to request lakefront rooms and rates.

Cindy or Mary will most likely be there in the afternoons say 2 to 5-ish until the season opens.

 All rooms have two queen beds, tubs, showers, color cable, air conditioning and soundproofing.  Yes the entry and parking are paved.  There is a 24-hour cancellation policy.

King Copper Motel

Michigan folks!  Meet us at the Shell station in St Ignace on Friday morning the 16th at 9:30....kick-stands up at 10 A.M.

We plan on staying  in St Ignace Thursday night.  Downstate folks might find that idea particularly appealing.

The distance to Copper Harbor is a little over 310 miles.  This is our route with several exceptions.  There is a 10-mile detour around the Cut River Bridge and some construction along route 2 around Naubinway.  We would have taken 28 instead but there's construction just east of Seney too so we might as well take the scenic route.  Plan to be on the road for 8-10 hours or so.  We'll gas up in Seney (95 mi), lunch and gas up in Marquette (75 mi) and get gas again in Houghton/Hancock (100 mi).  We'll probably arrive in Copper Harbor early evening around 7 or 8 P.M., check in and mosey over to the Mariner North for dinner.  Peggy is the owner/manager and has offered us a 10% discount.  They're known there for their ribs, fresh fish and pizza.  They also have a full bar so plan on a little stroll if you're going to imbibe.    Copper Harbor is a very small town so most things are within walking distance; even Manganese falls though it's close to a mile out ("walking distance" is a relative thing...heheh).

Saturday:  Grab some breakfast when you get up.   Coffee and a muffin at Boreal Beans in the Brockway Inn on the main drag or sit-down at The Pines Resort which opens at 6:30 A.M..  The Keweenaw Mountain Lodge at the golf course opens for breakfast at 8 A.M..

A few things to do in the area

        Baraga Ojibwa Casino on Hwy M-38

        Historic Calumet Theatre 340 6th St.  11 am - 2 pm, 45 min guided tours

        Coppertown USA Mining Museum - 25815 Red Jacket Rd Calumet

        Wildflower exhibit -US Hwy 41, 2 mi. north of Calumet at Vics cabins (over 230 varieties)

       Waterfalls

        Ft Wilkins State Park - historic fort on Lake Fanny Hooe

        Brockway Mountain

        Delaware Mine tours

        Copper Harbor Lighthouse tours

    * Rock hounding - agates on many rock beaches of the Keweenaw north shore; greenstones primarily on "poor rock" piles along Cliff Drive and at the Delaware and Mandan mines; copper at old mines along US41. Take care to avoid private property.
    * Canoeing/kayaking
    * Birding
    * Scuba Diving
    * Golf

Sunday:  We know some folks have to work on Monday.  Some are planning on making the trip back a two-day thing with an over-night stop in St. Ignace.  Some folks from farther downstate are planning on heading back Saturday afternoon to chop a hundred miles or two off their Sunday return home.  Talk to your chapter members.

Hey everyone...  Timbr isn't just 'Hawking' his product.  This is one of the best VRCC rides I've ever been on, in probably one of the most beautiful areas of our country.

The rooms have no 'electric' A/C, as mother nature provides a wonderful cool breeze off the lake at all times.  The locals are as nice as you'll ever meet, and as everyone knows, there are not too many of us in WI and MI, that can be called 'skinny' because the food is sooo good  cooldude

And the rumored 'party out back' is just that, a rumor...  Ya see, I'm the one in the first picture, and I had no control of the events that took place that night, no control...  Roll Eyes

If ya can find the time, and feel like spendin' some time with some of the VRCC's best, make yer reservations now.  Ya won't regret it!

Just when the highway straightened out for a mile
And I was thinkin' I'd just cruise for a while
A fork in the road brought a new episode
Don't you know...

Conform, go crazy, or ride a motorcycle...
