JeffK's link has the one you can order frrom Honda. I have put several of them in, including mine and as of this writing no problem. http://www.jkozloski.com/generic_parts.htmSave this, as it has a lot of good info and what will work besides a Valkyrie specific part. This replacement part # is addressed is the next to last one in the right column.

mine melted too. few months ago. on my 97'
although it was my own fault. I had wired up an audio system without using a relay. Learned the hard way the importance of relays. Theres nothing like sitting on the side of the road at a toy run watching all of the harleys pass you. That taught me a life lesson right there lol.

I wonder why 97's seem to have this problem.

I don't think it makes any differrence on year 97 Valk's. Mine and all the other ones I have made a replacement for, had a 500W set of driving lights without a relay. Mine was my own stupidity, the others didn't know any better. Case closed.

I bought one and installed it on my wife's 98 Standard as her OEM failed. The two battery terminals were reversed so had to file one of the connectors to make it work. It operated o.k. after that, but they are not built as well as OEM. I broke one of the termials loose when doing something else and found an OEM that Pinwall had and now using that one. If you look closely at the pic, there is a B and an M next to the battery terminals and they are reversed from the OEM part.

Woa! Too late, I ordered one yesterday. $10.50 free shipping. Parts fitch for the Jeff K fix showed $79 for the relay from Honda. I replaced my fried one with an OEM from Pinwall I had as a spare. $14 when purchased quite a while ago. I want a spare for the road for my 98 Tourer & 97 standard. I am going to do the Rattlebar's fix on both when it is warm enough to work in my garage. http://www.rattlebars.com/mtz/starter.html

I did the rattlebar fix. Which is really just a "simple servicing." However, I removed the red piece all together. Stripped the wires and added the spade connectors. Hooked them back to the solenoid with plenty of dielectric grease. Works great.
I finally invested in a good soldering iron and some acid core solder. My years (literally) of pigtailing the wires together are forever finished. It just pays off to solder them.

I had relays on any accessory including my air horns. Still cooked the relay last summer on my 98 tourer. I had a spare when it happened out on the hwy. so I was able to fix it & run.
