Deep East Texas

« Reply #40 on: August 12, 2009, 09:28:45 AM »

How 'bout a deep east Texas Valk guy meeting up with you folks sometime Saturday AM.  Don't know what your route plans are, but you might want to try going east on TX 7 from Nacogdoches to Center, then US 96 north, rejoin US 59 at Tenaha and on to Jefferson.  TX 7 is nice bike road, welcome change from the 4-lanes...
I ( "we" if I can talk the boss-lady into going) can meet most anywhere though.

We made reservations for Sat Night - looking forward to it!
We plan on heading East from the MetroMess early Saturday morning, probably stopping somewhere for Breakfast.
Any suggestions for a good spot would be appreciated.
Perhaps, meet up with the group somewhere for lunch?

the Houston group should arrive before noon so if the Dallas group wants to find a place for lunch that can accomidate us...please do. We'll be at the hotel around 11 AM.

I'm going to call Auntie Skinners and make a dinner reservation so don't pick that for lunch.

QOTFU,  It looks like I'll have an additional 6 people coming with us next weekend, rather than the 2-4 I mentioned earlier.    cooldude   This last one's a Vulcan rider who was hesitant to go with a bunch of Honda folks.    Roll Eyes  Told him you'd probably have the 2 boys with you, so we'd be going slow enough he'd be able to keep up with us !   2funny   My humor is sometimes not fully appreciated   ???

We've decided to ride up to Jefferson Friday afternoon. It's only about a 130 jaunt for us.  I just called the hotel and reserved for the extra night.  Lady there said they have 30 rooms booked for VRCC for Saturday.  Looks like there's gonna be a party!

If you have time to take the Graceful Ghost paddlewheel ride on Caddo Lake, it should be good.  Some bikers from here just did that while in Jefferson and couldn't stop talking about how great it was.  http://www.gracefulghost.com/  Sorry I can't join you guys this time.

Janet & I rode to Lori & BnB Tom's this morning and left there about 8:30, just in time to meet Lemondrop in Allen at 9:00.  After a nice ride (with one u-turn) through Wylie, Rockwall, Quinlan, the Tawakonies, Emory, Mineola, and Tyler, we had a huge BBQ lunch at the Country Tavern just west of Kilgore.  After that, it was Kilgore, Longview, and into Jefferson.  Got to the Hotel at 4:30.  We're about to head out on a scouting mission and may add to the following suggestions later.

The lunch suggestions for Saturday, courtesy of the front desk, are 1) Don Juan's, the Mexican Restaurant immediately south of the Inn of Jefferson (same parking lot and supposedly the best in town), and 2) The Hamburger Store & More - a Jefferson tradition for over 40 years.

The front desk said that, other than Don Juan's and Auntie Skinners, few places will be able to seat us all together.  Considering the Inn of Jefferson is on the south side of town, it might make sense for everyone to meet at the hotel, offload the bikes, freshen up, and make the final decision - walk to Mexican or ride to Hamburgers where they also have pie a la mode!

That's right, Kim.  Pie a la mode

I made the reservation for 6:00PM at Auntie Skinner's. I tried for a bit later but they suggested 6:00 if we want to make the Ghostwalk/train on time. They have a band playing if we want to go after the walk and train.

After a ride through town this evening, we were diverted back toward the hotel by train traffic.  As we passed the hotel, we saw that Mr. & Mrs Allber (Allen & Connie) had just arrived from Hemphill.  We stopped, and after a room 105 happy hour at the hotel, walked to Don Juan's for dinner tonight.  Pretty good Tex-Mex, margaritas, and cold beer.  The service was good and it was really convenient.

Jefferson is really pretty and there looks to be several hours of walking around downtown to be done before dinner.

So, what time will everyone else get here tomorrow?

Mary waitressed at Don Juan's back in '94 when we first moved to Jefferson.  There were very few places in Jefferson to sit and eat back then.
