Well.. went in to do regular maint. on the rear end and found the pinion and shaft in VERY bad shape.... Full of dusty rust and the splines are almost not there.... one good twist of the throttle.. and it would be slip city...
I have checked them on a regular basis, 10,000 miles.... and they were always in good shape. What I found this time when I pulled the pumpkin from the swingarm was: oil in the swingarm housing, and the pinion cup was bone dry.... After tearing everything apart, it seems the oil seal under the pinion lock ring..( the one under the pinion cup) was leaking and not allowing the oil in the hub to reach the pinion cup intake holes. The hole to lube the pinion cup were clear, it just seems the oil could not reach them . At least that is the best sense I can make of it. The oil seal on the drive shaft appeared worn and dry... I will be replacing the pinion cup, and the oil seal and o-ring under it... and the drive shaft and oil seal on it.
I really think the oil seal under the pinion cup is what caused the problem. I think it lowered the level of lube in the hub enough to not let it oil the pinion cup. It leaked into the swingarm housing... but did not leak out and onto the ground.... I would have found that...
Ordered parts tonight, will put it back together when they come in.

I kinda wish the oil had leaked out onto the ground at the pumpkin to swingarm connection.... I would have found that.... The best I can figure is the oil leaking into the swingarm lowered the level enough to not feed the pinion.....Like I said... my best guess after tearing it apart.... but yeah... 10,000 miles ago it looked new... now it's toast. Heah.... they are old bikes.. and getting older... I think rubber parts will be their downfall..... I have a set of new carb o-rings and gaskets I will be putting in the bike before next summers' trips.

Is there not a lot of discussion on the board about the same issue you are having HG? Need open weep holes for the oil to splash up into the teeth, but I have heard others say to go ahead and lube the pinion cup just like you do the rear end splines. Anyone want to chime in?

I had mine do the same thing...one tire change...it was good to go...next time...it was rusted bits....When I took mine apart, I noticed the oil seal on the shaft was not in the cup (even though I know I put it in there the last time...). I think this had something to do with my problem...don't know about HG's...

My seal on the shaft was in the cup..... the oil seal under the cup and threaded keeper for the pinion was leaking, and there was oil in the swingarm shaft housing.... It is a puzzlement... but the pinion cup and driveshaft are toast.... they were dusty dry...... I think just enough oil was lost to the housing that the level was not feeding the pinion cup...... the feed holes in the cup were open.... and I did put some grease on the shaft and in the cup last time I put it together.

Now you have me a little anxious, Mark. I'm past my normal (full) service interval and even a little more than a normal interval past my last peek that was necessitated by a rear tire change.
Guess we get to test my "pookie the hell out of it" theory!

last time I cheked mine it was fine but it had grease on it. When I putit back together I added more pumpkin lube. Its due for a look-see but that darn tire will not wear off!

I'd be sceered water could get in there. If it did, the water would be at the outside of the pinion cup, at the oil seal to the rearend. The new parts are in.... and the old pinion cup had some pretty good wear where the oil seal ran on the cup. This is the 1st time I have heard of this failure..... maybe something we will have to watch for.

Isn't this o-ring much like the one on the drive hub where there is not much movement between the 2 sealing surfaces? Wonder how that thing had any wear on it? Was the pinon cup nut loose when you removed it? So many questions......  Hay  Jimmyt

Part number 31 is the oil seal that runs on the pinion cup and leaked the oil to the shaft housing/swingarm. The drawing is not exactly right... the o-ring #35, goes under the pinion lock nut #10......
Got FB's mom moved Thursday...We had the garage sale yesterday and today..got rid of a bunch of her old stuff..!!!.. so I plan to put the rearend back together tomorrow afternoon.... yeah... I know it's Superbowl Sunday..... but I need to go see my mom in the morning..... and I have been doing some consulting and will need to work next week.... so tomorrow after noon is it.

Hey, HG, while I need to watch all i can, I am going to be getting ready to watch the super bowl. Since I put in the request for the food, it would not be well received for me to leave all the cooking to TBird, so I will be playing sous chef instead of watch Chef Mark work on the Valk. Thanks for keeping me in the loop...
