Does any one else's breather cap on the pumpkin leak?  I thought it was the fill cap and tried to remove it with vice grips. Kinda twisted it up and it get a line of leakage from top of pumpkin to the bottom of pumpkin every six months. Is this leakage normal?
How do you get it off if I want to replace it? Vice grips didn't work.

No, that's not normal. The only time I had leakage was from over-filling the final drive.

Probably what you're seeing is now normal, that vent is just pressed/pushed in and its probably cracked allowing for a bit of leakage. That probably won't hurt anything from the amount of leakage you're seeing. But, that vent should still just pop out if you want to replace it.

+1  I fill mine to just overflowing with the bike standing upright, about 150 ml of hypo lube. I've never seen anything coming out of the breather cap.

OK, I didn't think to ask this first thing in the morning. How much oil did you put in it ? It doesn't take much, 5.1 ounces which is to the bottom of the real fill hole.

The replacement vents are cheap. I've never been able to remove one
without destroying it. They're stuck in there real good, and they're pretty
much just a tube with a little chrome helmet spot welded on...

not "about"150ml.  Right at 150ml and if you fill it on the side stand or while the pumpkin is off the bike you dont have to overflow anything and get oil all over stuff.

A good example of not being familiar with your bike and not reading up on a procedure before doing something to it. A manual is well worth the investment....a Honda shop manual. If you looked at the final drive, you would have seen the two "plugs" on the outer side near the exhaust. I would assume that should have raised a question as to their function.

Before doing anything you're not totally familiar with, just post the question here. We've all been there at the beginning of our ownership. Re. the cover, as stated....it just presses in but can be a real bear to remove. If it's leaking from there, then there's a good chance it's overfilled, or you may have cracked the mount trying to remove it but I doubt it.

In retrospect I should have asked or looked up chrome caps purpose.
I was servicing the final drive splines and had the bags off and saw what looked to be a dipstick for the final drive oil.  uglystupid2  Yank, pull nothing's moving, maybe a little twist with the vice grips oops. Cap kinda bent collapsed.  I just left it alone. Bike only had 4k total miles on it. So I'm pretty sure it is still the factory fill in the pumpkin.
Sounds like nothing to worry about till the next time the bags are off

Why not just put a new one on now?  Not sure I would feel comfortable knowing that there "might" be oil leaking that could get on my rear tire and cause a wreck.

They're cheap enough and you can then change the final drive oil and feel confident that there is enough oil in there to prevent permanent damage to an increasingly difficult to find and relatively expensive final drive unit.

Good luck with whatever you decide...

... which is to the bottom of the real fill hole.

With the bike sitting upright, not on the sidestand.  Using the bottom of the fill hole as a guide with the bike on the side stand will overfill the pumpkin.

Broke mine last final drive oil change. Bought 3 from hdl. Think they were only about 5 bucks a piece.
