Gonna change the oil in the bike this weekend and was wondering if anyone has the generic part number for an oil filter from Wal-Marts. Some one posted a list of generic parts which I had saved, but while cleaning up my computer this week, I accidentally lost several things, that list being one of them. TIA

ST6607 is the same size as the Honda filter.

ST7317 fits the Valkyrie and is about 1.5 times the length of the stock filter.

I use the ST3593a from wal mart. It is a much bigger filter, with the same valve inside. With this larger filter the valk holds a full gallon not 3.9 quarts.

If you have the chrome cover the ST6607 is the one you need.

Sorry I'm not "buying" it.

Everything at Walmart is made in China and as cheaply as possible.

For me it's just not worth the risk to save a few cents.

Here is some good reading for you.
http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Filters.html#OilFilters
Wal Mart filters are made ny champion labs, the world largest filter manufacturer. Its your money. The dealer stuff is nuts, take o-rings for example/ I got 50 123 vitron orings for $8 the dealer wanted about $6 for one, the crappy oem ones that flatten out.

Honda doesn't manufacture oil filters, refine oil, or make a large number of maintenance items on which their name is displayed.  There are only a handful of oil filter manufacturers and they produce both the "name brand" and "generic" items.

If spending more money makes you more comfortable, then perhaps it's a good investment, but not for me.

I buy generics in most categories for the same reasons.

Atypical for someone that believes you get what you pay for.  Surprising that you dont ride a Harley.  Also theres a hint of superiority in there.  Do you think the ones that have been here forever and have the most knowledge about this machine are fools, that have been getting along all these years by dumb luck.  As noted, Honda puts out a spec., and accepts the cheapest bidder to provide their branded parts.  They do not manifacture these items.   A little research goes a long way to keep inane comments in check, and also to keep the author from coming off like a twit.

No, I don't buy Honda Oil or filters either.

Not because of inferior quality concerns, rather because I don't believe that it is the best.

I use Amsoil oil and filters because I know the quality control that they insist upon.

You are correct about there only being a few companies that make oil filters.

But, the quality of those filters varies greatly.

They are manufactured to the specs that the buyer wants.

With Walmart cost takes priority over quality, so while there filters may "Get By", I am sure that they aren't the highest quality that you can buy.

To some extent you do "get what you pay for".

My contention is (and I'll stand by it) is that QUALITY is not the primary concern of Walmart when they set the specs for the manufacturer.

Their bottom line is "COST".

And they will gladly accept lower quality if it keeps their costs down.

Will a Walmart Filter get you by?

Probably, but is it the highest quality filter that you can use?

Absolutely not.

And the "HARLEY" remark was totally uncalled for.

Like I have said before, if you can't debate a point without name calling or insults.

YOU HAVE ALREADY LOST THE DEBATE.

Every one is entitled to his/her opinion.  I'm sure that you all have changed each other minds.

There's no reason to question one person's decision or call them by other than their "handle".

Sorry Solo1. Sad It was not my intention of starting a "hen" fight. (MY apologies to all the girls out there) I just wanted some info that I had lost, which I did receive, and I figured this was the best place to find it. Thank you to all who replied. Gotta go now. My Dad lives about 100 miles round trip from here and I want to get an early start. Happy Father's Day to all the Dads of this great club.

it seems that the intervals between oil changes is more important than the the size of the particles trapped or not! will the better filter affect oil flow sooner? happy father day!  go for a valk ride! cooldude cooldude

The problem with "Cheap" filters is that they tend to clog up which severely restricts the oil flow or if it has a bypass valve the valve stays open.

This allows for plenty of oil flow but none of it is being filtered.

The other issue is using a filter that was designed for use on a car or truck.

Just because it fits doesn't mean that's it's right.

Motorcycles (most of them) share the oil between the transmission, clutch and engine.

This leads to an increased amount of deposits.

If the filter wasn't designed with this in mind then it wasn't designed to handle the "extra" deposits.

Which is essentially the same reason that I won't use oil that wasn't specifically formulated for use in a motorcycle.

Alot of automotive oils have friction modifiers that can be detrimental to the wet clutches of a motorcycle.

Personally, I use Amsoil oil and filters in everything that I own.

And I have done so for the last 15 years.

I do so because I know that quality is their number one priority.

There are lots of good products out there and oppinions vary greatly but I'll stick to what I know.

What I definately know is that when it comes to the care of my VALK I am not going to trust the quality control experts @ Walmart.

Especially when it comes to the "cheapest" thing on their shelf.

To each his own I guess, and if saving a couple of bucks on an oil change is more important to someone than the quality then so be it.

I use Purolator Pure One oil filters.  Part number PL14610.  It's 3 1/4" and allows you to use a whole gallon...but you can't use your chrome oil filter cover with it.

If you want to use the Pure One but want the stock length so you can use your chrome oil filter cover, then use part number PL14612.  It's 2 1/2" long.

Here's some oil and oil filter reading.  Use it if you like...or don't.  But it's good info and may help you decide what's good and what's not and help you decide what filter you want to use.

http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Filters.html

....and here's some filter aplication/brand/size charts.....

http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/FilterXRef.html

From the above site, these are the oil filters that they recommend for our Valkyries.....

Recommended filters.
All have superior
filtering.

About 2.5 inches long.
 - Purolator Pure One PL14612, about $6.
 - Mobil M1-108, about $12.
   Made by Champion.
 - Bosch 3300, about $6.

About 3.25 inches long.
