Got bike disassembled to painter checking parts noticed that the long tube of the petcock appears to be split part way down. Is it supposed to be that way? Time for a Pingle??

Did you unscrew the "secret screw" that you get to through the hole in the on,off, reserve switch? If not it broke when you removed the tank.
I think its time for a Pingel as soon as you get a Valkyrie

are you talking the actuator arm, or the brass petcock feed tubing that goes inside the tank, or the plastic screen (part #4 in the attached link) that covers the petcock feed tubing inside the tank? This will help with the diagnosis...here's a link with the diagram of the petcock http://www.directlineparts.com/product.asp?pid=44481&str=0&mdl=1539&mdy=1999

Brass tubing inside tank, Screen not there at all upon disassembly. Ujjjjjj have a Valkyrie just in little pieces on the pool table in the game room, well there and the great big piece out in the workshop. Even naked the fat lady is impressive. Some friends of the daughters were over (Harley people) guy looked at it told his SO about the beast I had.

Did you look in the tank ? First time I pulled the petcock the screen stayed in the tank they have been in there many years. I grabbed it with some pliers and twisted it loose then pulled it out. The screen had to be replaced try and find a new one before you start.

The openings in the tank still taped up, noticed the screen in the picture, didn't hear anything rattlin around in the tank but will check. Salty1 thats what the question is.

Doubt it will rattle around the end sticks to the circumference of the hole. Some guys posted they re-used the screen I twisted the base during removal.

+1 I totally agree with Chris! Now you get to decide OEM or Pingel?

I'm leaning pingel just to avoid the hydrolock problem entirely. Question that I don't remember seeing is does the OEM handle fit the pingle ? I know its here somewhere what is the pingle number?

No, the OEM switch (the knob for on,off, res) goes away when you install the Pingel

I left mine in place for looks, secured it with a small Philips head screw.

I prefer the OEM petcock in combination with a Dan Marc valve. FWIW.
