I used the search and found some info on this.  My Interstate is new to me, but I haven't figured everything out yet.  I have the speaker covers off.  In the search it says that you have to remove the windshield.  I am wondering why.  It looks like a similtr mounting system as my standard with the Hondaline windhield.  Remove the 4 bolts, disconnect the headlight wiring and the turn signals and it is off.  I need to get to the back of the instrument panel to replace bulbs.  If there is an easier way to get to this let me know.  What am I missing?
As always thanks for any and all help.

Simply put, the direction are correct.

Remove the windshield and the fairing will rotate down.

Hinge (is/on/are) the turn signals.

What hinge?

I have had my fairing off at least a dozen times and removing the windshield is NOT required it does make it a little safer to handle to prevent scratching the windshield.

It will rotate a little on the lower bolts that hold the fairing/wiring frame thing to the sides of the forks but it will be minimal movement since the lower lip of the fairing will bump the front of the fork tubes. I take the 2 bolts on each side of the mounting frame and the fairing shell will pull straight forward and off. You will need to disconnect wiring before removing the two lower bolts mayb that what is described as hinged forward.

Good luck go slow.

Ok correction,,, if you want the instrument panel to stay in place on the bike then you have to pull the windshield then you will remove the two lower nuts that face straight back one in each lower side at the turn signal mounts area.

Sorry about the previous statement that is when you want to remove the entire fairing with the mounting frame attached.

Instrument panel will rotate back toward the tank without taking the fairing off. Just put a towel on the tank to prevent scratches.

Really trying to keep it simple.

When you get the windshield off there are just two bolts then holding the top of the fairing to the fairing mounting frame.

If you remove those two bolts........... the fairing will rotate down,, and the turn signals (the front ones) will be the point of rotation for the fairing.

Now of course, there are a few more things need be done like disconnect a few connectors and some other things but simply put - it will become very obvious how to gain access to the rear of the instrument panel.

The 4 bolts that hold the windshield on also bolt the faring to the frame.

OK, it's off but I went back and took some pix.
There are four bolts holding the windshield on, two per side. These are the bolt holes in the faring

These are the bolts I put back into the faring mounting frame

The small hole between the bolts is for the sheet metal screws mentioned in the instructions.

As you can see, these bolts also secure the top of the faring to the frame. The only way to remove the faring without removing the windshield would be to unbolt the frame from the forks.
