I just made a post today about how well I liked the 404 rear tire on the front and then this afternoon I hit the front brake slightly in a small patch of leaves going straight and the whole bike went down in a instant and the front broke loose without warning.
I was going 10 MPH or less but none the less this is my first mishap in 6 years on this bike.
I am ok but one of the motor crash bars should be replaced.

Did you learn to not use the front brake on wet leaves and sandy corners from your little go down?
Sorry to hear ya laid her down, but everyone has to go down some time or another. We have all been down for one reason or another.
I came blasting into the Post too hot and tried to stop before I ran over a fellow officer who stepped into the parking lot about the time I entered. Instead of stopping, I went down on the right side. That was embarrassing, especially since I had to fill out an accident report.
Captain got a little bent out of shape with his Sgt. Then to really make matters worse, he made me put of speed limit signs in the parking lot. 10 MPH ones.
Yup, that was the last time I pulled that stunt.

I'm not an expert, but on wet leaves I don't think the tire choice would make much difference. Wet leaves are close to ice in the 'slickery' department. Were they wet?

No they weren't but the funny thing is I did this right in front of 2 people behind me on sport bikes who told me when they stopped to help the pavement there at this stop was like ice without leaves and it was covered in leaves as well. I hardly used any brake at all and it just went down.
One time I saved it when I hit a solid grease slick behind a resturant but this was even quicker than that, no time at all the front just dropped.
I learned something which is use more rear brake more, I have been getting in the habit of using to much front because my bike seems to wear the rear pads quick for some reason.

I don't know about the compound used in the D404, but have found that mine holds like glue in snow storm, heavy rain and sleet, so I doubt the tire really had anything to do with you going down. Here in Wa they use alot of sand on the roads and we've got to be really alert to piles of it in the curves and particularly at any intersection. Brake pads are cheaper than chrome, so use that rear brake too !!

I have found leavies offered a cover for frost/ice under them. The leaves warm up, dry off, but underneath, out of site of the sun, it's still frozen.

Dont blame the tire. I had the same thing happen 4.5 years ago and was out of commision for 18 months. Wet leaves are wet leaves. Anyone would have gone down under the same circumstances as I did.

I went to get gas last year. Started pulling into the stall at the Shell station going less than 5mph. Then I saw a truck racing towards the stall that I was half way into already. I nailed the front brake. Yep a little bit oil dry that I did not see. (I went down soft and slow) So lesson learned. Even if I have a clear path going anyplace be careful because none of us know where anybody else is wanting to go. Ya and the guy had the balls enough to ask me if I was embarrassed. LOL I told him no that I was just very pissed at him. Of course he walked away without even asking me if I needed help getting bike back up. Ride safe and keep it up!

Is the D 404 any quieter than the E3 I'm currently using? The noise from that front E3 is getting on my last nerve. And would the 404 make a good match with the austone on the rear?
