Down in da Swamps of Louisiana

I'm to the point where I must remove all of the intake bolts and remove the carb assembly. It looks as though the ENTIRE 6-pack comes out as 1 unit!  Sad
removed the PAIR valve controller but cannot get to the bolts holding the pair valves due to the cross brace that hold the carbs. I guess the carbs assembly must come out first... Lips Sealed
I'm flying blind here.... Cool
Does Dag have a desmog video or carb removal video that I can watch?
or any type of guidline.
I have viewed the desmog guideline multiple times http://www.valkyrieriders.com/shoptalk/desmog.htm, but it doesnt get into too much detail. (it just says remove this: remove that)

is there anything that explains this a little better for dummies?  crazy2

Any time you start to work on the bike it sure is helpful to have all the tools you may need.

I had no problems removing the smog tanks from the top of the motor and did not have to do any removal or disturbing of the carburetors.

Seems to me you are going places you shouldn't have to.

I have no special tools whatsoever, although I do have plenty of wrenches and sockets.

You'd be well advised to buy more tools that you evidently are lacking, to perform the job you desire, rather than to simply disassemble more of the bike.

You are heading up avenues that may cause greater problems for you.

I've desmogged two bikes and had no problems removing the pair valves. Be sure and remove all the hoses connected to the pair valves then see if you can remove the bolts. You don't have to remove that cross member. If you need more tools go to Harbor Freight and find what you need, adequate and inexpensive.

Definitely take the carb bank out as a unit. With the pair valve system removed and the intake tubes off, loosen the left motor mount so it can be moved back then the bank will come out at an angle. By the way taking it out from the right side has been good for me. Take your time and don't force anything. Patience will be a winner.

Just in case you don't have a copy of a service manual go to Dag's site and download it.

There is no reason that the pair valves cannot be removed without touching the carb assembly. I just de-smogged mine without removing anything on top of the engine but the filter and box. Just needed a 1/4 set of metric sockets and an extension. In fact, the 1/4 set worked for everything except the engine guards and what allen wrenches, screwdrivers and needle nose pliers I needed.

I agree the carb assembly can stay in place to do a desmog, however I believe Cajundood wants to remove his carb bank to eliminate some gas leaks, i.e. needs fuel rail O-rings

I guess that's an assumption based on the title of the thread.

For that is the only place gas is mentioned.
