ok were doing the pot type ECT mode and im a little confused. I dont see where i have to use a dioed  just the pot and rest. is that right? and it goes inline on the green with blk stripe from the blue plug. nothing is done to the red plug wires with the pot style mod. just want to do it right the 1st time and not hack up the harness.

Hi,
The diode is to disable the advance when in neutral (otherwise, the idle will be high).  An additional diode was added to disable the advance when the clutch is pulled in.

Why not simply forget about that modification and get an advance wheel.

Never read any problems arising from an advance wheel,

But plenty with the ECT mod!

Trigger wheel is the way to go. You can file the tab on your stock wheel and cost you nothing but time and labor. I thought about doing the ECT mod and decided not to as to avoid a wiring issue that could leave me stuck miles from home. The TW keeps it simple.

There is a good thread here on filing the alignment tab on the stock wheel. Please do the search thing.

Just my two cents.

Go to Shoptalk at the top of this page and find the ECT mod page. It tells you everything you need to know. I don't know what instructions you are using, but this writeup does mention diodes and gives you a parts list.

Some people are too stupid to realize how ignorant they are.

Well, cold start problems for one (from too much advance at starting rpm's).

Decreased high RPM power, for another.

And some have screwed up during the install (which is a much more destructive error than can be made with an ect error).

Cold start problem, no, that is false.
I've had a 6* trigger wheel in MGM since they 1st came out.    I got it off of LaMont.
The biggest problem from cold starts is trying to get ya to keep your firkin fingers off the throttle.   Let is start NO throttle and only touch it once the RPM's have started to take over.

You may have worked a way around it.  But a cold start problem with an advance wheel is not false.  It may be worse with some bikes/owners than others, but it does exist.  That is why the manufactured ect cold engine advance does not kick in 'til around normal idle rpms.

BTW, my bike likes some throttle when starting.  Again, it varies owner to owner and bike to bike.
