Sometime in July I am headed through Montana, Wyoming and finally to Idaho. I have spent enough time in the other two states but have never been to Idaho. I have searched the internet a lot and have what I think will be a good ride but would like some people that have been there, or live there, to speak up and tell me what places or roads can not be missed. Thanks for your help!

I don't live there but travelled Idaho a fair amount. Hwy 12 Lolo to Orofino is an Idaho classic, the road thru Salmon and Challis is very scenic. I think everything north of a line drawn form Boise to Idaho Falls is pretty darn good riding.  Hwy 12 at the top of the pass near Lolo.  |

Not from that part of the world, but traveled there a lot. Michael is right, US 12 to Lolo Pass is a great ride. "Must not miss" places for me would be...
1. White Bird and White Bird Mountain on US 95, south of Grangeville. Lots of history (Nez Perce Wars) and one of the gateways to Hells Canyon.
2. Bannock, MT, a well preserved ghost town, nice little campground there too.
3. Big Hole National Battlefield. On MT 43. Another Nez Perce Wars site. Very helpful, informative personel make it an interesting visit.
4. ID 21 from Boise to Stanley (crosses Banner Summit). Great ride, several nice campgrounds, interesting little towns.
Wish I could ride with you. Enjoy your trip.

What the other folks said is correct, but I need to add a few thoughts.
1. Check for current road construction on US95 between Lewiston and Coeur d'Alene.....this has been undergoing a long time widening project and it has been so bad in the last few years that I have avoided it altogether. On one trip to CdA, the "run-a-round" provided to keep traffic off the new construction area (about 4 miles worth) was so rough and poorly done by the contractor that I had to use 4WD LOW while towing an 18 ft trailer in order to avoid destroying the trailer....it was THE WORST example of this that I have ever experienced. To top it off, there was no warning of this project until about a mile before I got there...if I had been riding my Valk, I would have had to turn around and go back about 30 miles to find detour route.
2. If your travels find you in the Twin Falls area, be sure to go see Shoshone Falls (about 3-4 miles east of TF). Also nearby is the ramp that Evil Kneivel used when he tried to jump the Snake River Canyon.
3. If you will be traveling near any holidays, make sure you call ahead to book motel reservations or you might find "no vacancy" signs in most places......I found out the hard way about 5 years ago when I arrived in Salmon without a reservation.
I am going to InZane, so will be away from here for a week or so, but if you want my contact info in case you need assistance, let me know. I live part-time in the Twin Falls area and part-time in Reno, NV.

.....Jim.. next time ya go to Salmon check out the Solaas B@B.. real fine folks and a quaint lil place.. I stayed there a few times and went fishin w Roger in Alaska last year.. if yer an outdoorsman you will love these folks. its outside of salmon about 5 miles towards lemhi.. another suggestion would be hundred acre wood B@B.. its about 5 miles north of north fork.. excellent dinners too |

Paul, I don't live in Idaho, but I have been working in Central Washington for the past two years. If you are looking for a weekend riding partner, I can meet you anywheres from Boise North. A lot of construction on Hwy 95. May not be the most enjoyable during the summer. Anywheres north of Boise is great, and as all the others tell you Hwy 12 is a great road. But, they are doing a lot of erosion control work (putting drains across the highway to drain water into the Loscha River) so you might hit some sand spots in the corners. Haven't read whether they are going to repave Hwy 12 after they finish this construction. The road is wide open on the weekends when there is no construction.
