I must say, it has one cool cover.
Okay, that was about the last thing I can say positively about Hellride. I wanted to like it, didn't think I would, but I tried. Larry Bishop (from Savage Seven fame) wrote it, directed it, and starred in it. He really should have picked one. He should not have picked writing in it, or acting in it. Throughout the movie I thought, "if the lead actor understood the script perhaps the words would be better delivered" only to realize that the lead actor had crafted the script.
This is a Q Terrintino send up to the Grindhouse exploitation movies, and it is just that...an exploitation movie. It is full of violence, drugs, and sex for little to no reason. I was continually surprised that the film earned an R rating. Bishop thanked the editing prowess of Terrintino for resulting in the R rating...I think payola and corruption is at work in the film industry.
I will give Bishop some credit, he did try to differentiate the story line and use flash backs to fascinate the unfolding. Did I mention the word try? It is debatable if that worked. In the absence of a complicated plot it seemed a bit odd to jump around. Essentially a bad biker kills a woman, her son runs away, 30 years later you find out that he has himself become a bad biker and that one of the bikers that he joined with had vowed to help his mother get a box (never opened) into the hands of the son. The box has three keys scattered among the characters. It directly mentions only one of those keys, you assume the kid had one to begin with...or something...the third key needed a reason.
The bikes looked good. It's a biker movie, so let's discuss the bikes. Mostly HD and Indians. A variety of older bikes and nice customs. Standard budget saver some of the background bikes were parallel twins and dirt bikes.
Dennis Hopper plays a cool biker character. Not a cameo re-hash of easyrider the way Fonda's bit in Wild Hogs could have been mentioned. Hopper gets a new (old) bike and a new attitude. I'm not sure I'll refer to it as a character, but Hopper is one of the best parts of the movie.
Did I mention the naked women?
I think some porn has a better story line, at least one that makes more sense...hot biker chicks order a pizza and orgy ensues really would make more sense than the story in Hellride.
But it killed some time last night. That is after all why you buy a movie like Hellride, to kill time. I bought it used, and then on sale so whatever.
If I were going to compare it to old bike flicks for you aficionados I would rank it with Angels Hard As They Come or maybe Black 6.
