Anyone running stock exhaust and a front ME880 notice that it whines real loud around 50-55 mph? I just put some new tires on, dont get me wrong, they are waaay better than the 206's that were on it. but, the front tire whines like a mud tire around 50-55. Pretty sure im at 38psi also. I only have about 200 miles on the new shoes so far, perhaps they still need to break in.

Metz tires are prone to cupping and yours will surely do so at 38psi. Bump the front to at least 40 and the rear to at least 42. Metz are great riding tires but not long lasting more pressure will extend that life a bit

Hmm...Thanks for the info. Perhaps I should have done more research. I dont ride that much though. Will bump the pressure before next ride.

Are you sure the whine is coming from the front tire and not the gear box? It is normal for the straight cut gears to put up a racket in 5th gear at that speed. If it starts at 50 and stops at 55 I would bet that is the problem, which is not a problem. Hoser ???

I ran many sets of Metz and they made no noise, and my bikes have stock exhaust.
Look at the MAX PSI printed on your tire's sidewall and read 50psi..... run that front at 44... rear at 45. That is not overinflated at all for steel ME880s. They do fine in rain, heat, gravel and last longer that way.
If you have bias 880's I have no opinion.

Yes my first front Metz whined at 48 to 55 mph from day one, I got so I hated to cruise at that speed. It would quiet down in a long sweeper? After about 8000 miles, it quit doing it. I ran 42 to 44 PSI (no help). Next Metz did not do it. Go figure.

Yes but, the noise is clearly coming from the front end not below me. Thanks for the pionter though. Its definately the tire, not a gear whine.

We have a stretch of cement highway that makes a terrible whine noise from the tires (AVons) on my bike and my truck... Does it do so on ALL pavements? Maybe jack up the bike and check for front wheel bearing play, spin & feel for roughness... Make sure you don't have a bearing on its way out.

Get that front Metz 880 into that 44-46 or so pressure range and yer good to go. I've had one and liked it in hot cold dry wet-you get the idea. Mine never made tire noise-the tranny on the other hand--- RIDE SAFE.

Valkyrie tire presure spec is around 35 psi. Why is everyone using higher presures. I found that the factory spec 35pis gives much smooter ride on concrete.

I love them on my XR400 if that helps you. They make great dirt bike tires. MarcusS - The bike is so heavy that it chews up tires, more pressure makes 'em last longer.

Stock exhaust and 880's on mine, no front tire whine...try Mobile 1 15-50, helps keep the tranny whine down.

It does, but at the expense of tire life. -RP

As long as this thread is on ME 880's, as anyone tried to locate a stock size set lately. I was looking for a 150/80-R17 and couldn't find one. I am not in the market for an immediate purchase but I thought in the future an Avon rear with Metzler front would be a good combination. Metzler may have discontinued the sizes for the Valkyrie.

Farther, I just received a new catalog from JP Cycles and they have the front Metz 880 in the 150/80/R17 and in the bias also, Radial is listed at $209.99 and bias is $147.99. Also list the 180/70/R16 in the 880 XXL for $216.99.
As for the Michelin, I have the 180/65/16 bias on the rear of my Wing and I do like it. If they had the 180/70 I would sure try one on the Valk but already have a new Dunlop Taxi tire on hand when the E3 wears out.
