Motorcycle paint....

Now that I've repairedthe filler panel on my rear fender where the tail light use to be I now ned to repaint the area,, and have decided to do the bike as a whole. Has anyone here used the Duplicolor paint shop system. ITs supposed to be a ready to spray laquer (sp?). This is out of my league, but I'm too stubborn (cheap) to pay someone to paint it for me. Not looking for show quality, more durability than anything else (but dont want it to look like total crap.)

I'd go with a urethane that uses a catalyst YoungPUP, it is what all modern paints are. Once you do it it is no harder than using lacquer, and lays down much better,, it hardens quickly, and is much more durable, you just need to clean up your equipment pretty quickly when done. I used to do lacquer painting, but finally decided to get into the modern world about 7 or 8 years ago and have not regretted it once. What was the problem with that plate??

The filler plate was just tacked in a few spots and then had almost 3/8" of filler over it. Made a new filler. Welded it all the way around (that took almost 4 hrs to do due to me being over cautions about warping) and then only had to skim coat a few spots around the edges.

If you can handle that repair you should be able to repaint. The devil is in the details dont skimp on your prep, wet sand between coats and dont mix paint systems IE dont use PPG clear coat with duplicolor paint. I've had really good luck with mixing a bit of the color with the first coat of clear then just doing 2 coats of clear above the mixed coat. Base clear paints will look flat untill the clear is added so dont freak when it looks matted out. If you want a matte finish make sure you get the matte clear. If you are going to add ghost flames start out with a pearl base, mask off the flames or whatever design you want then go with the main colors. Again dont skimp on the prep it is the differance between an amature looking job and a professional one. I'm thinking of going matte black on my interstate with pearl white and red ghost flames. Cant put the cart before the horse however and that will have to wait untill next year.
