Hey Earl, I tried quite a few different LED bulbs, none of them were any brighter than the 1157.  Since your lenses are clear you would need an amber bulb I suppose, but try a 3496 bulb instead of the 1157.  The 1157 has 3 candlepower on tail light function and 32 candlepower on brake and turn.  The 3496 has the same 3 candlepower on tail light, but 43 candlepower on brake and turn.  You can see the difference.  I have amber lenses so I used the standard bulbs.

Terry & Earil, I have clear lenses in back and have them set up as run/turn/brake. I got the plug in LED's from Radiantz but are available elsewhere for less money. They're pretty bright. These have the incandescent bulb base on a short pigtail so they go right in just like a plain bulb. The LED's are on a small round board that fits right in the housing. I have amber ones in front, again...very bright. In fact, the only non-LED lights on the bike are the headlight and driving lights. The taillight is also a plug in type board, much brighter than OEM....especially when on the brakes. I've since added some double-flashing brake lights mounted between the rear fender and saddlebag. I cut out some SS sheet metal and mounted the lights on it, placed them under the top rear mounting bolt for the bags, between the bag and the rubber insulator. Sorry, no pics of that yet.

With brakes on.

Direct replacement bulbs are within the safe zone of my mechanical ability...I think. Now to discuss the funding with SWMBO.

Have I said ya'll are a right helpful bunch yet?

Thanks again!

Just so you'll know, these LED's plug in just like a regular bulb.

Here is a good option for you. I ran this in my Vulcan and there was quite a diference.
Bulb is a 2357 and is available through any auto parts store. Direct replacement for a 1157.
Take a look at the specs.
