I  am out on a ride today and have my saddlebags mounted.  When I stopped I noticed one saddlebag  was resting on the left pipe during the ride,  causing the outside rubber to melt and harden on the pipe. I  removed most of it right away from the hot pipes, but there is still a layer  of smudge left that I will have to clean up once I get back home.

Any suggestion  how best to clean this off of the pipeand make sure it looks like before?

I just use aluminum polish while the pipes are still warm

Just use an SOS scouring pad on hot or cold pipes. They don't scratch pots and won't scratch your pipes either.

Shocked  ??? Not on my pipes. I only use Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish for those chores. Sorry about the bag. Sad

You can cuss and rub and scrape and grind  Embarrassed  but for an easy fix...

"Professional Duty - Easy Off - Oven and Grill Cleaner" works WONDERS!  cooldude

Spray it on hot or cold pipes.  Let is set for 10 - 15 minutes.  Wipe it off with a damp towel.

Didn't get it all?  ???  Try a dab of Semichrome or other chrome polish.

It couldn't be easier  Smiley

Razor blade edge flat on the pipe.  No scratches if your careful.

+1 This is also how I get rubber off my pipes. Just make sure you are using a brand new blade, and change it out frequently if going through some hard stuff.

you've got to get the thick residue off first.  Don't get too aggressve because regardless of what some people say you can't remove scratches from chrome...it's not possible.  You can replace big scratches with finer scratches with actual removal of the chrome plating.  It's not like polishing solid aluminum or brass where the finish can be brought back by removing surface material and scratches leaving a new surface on the top.

The easy off method, repeated as needed will help with the thick stuff...if it's not too bad, then I use the never dull wadding on hot pipes to remove the melted gunk.  Be careful as the wadding gets hot fast and it will vaporize some of the polishing chemical but it works great.  You can also use a rag saturated with polish instead of the never dull...same warnings apply with burns and vapors.

Good luck and tell us how you made out.

Thanks for the responses. I read Chrisj CMA's response first and tried aluminum polish. To get the bigger stuff off I used a razor blade flat on the pipe just like whitestroke suggested, and it worked like a charm. I was a big too anxious and got a small half inch hairline scratch there now, but you have to look for it closely to see it.

Pipes look great again, now about that hole I now have in my saddlebags...  Sad

I read on the vtx forum to use a nickel.  I tried it on my pipes today and it actually worked.  Didn't see any scratches.  Several people on the forum said it worked for them as well.  Give it a try if nothing else works.

Smart n Final sells a product called Carbon Off. I've used it on pipes where shoe soles melted on them. Worked better than oven cleaner.
