AT 207K, my '97 Tourer still has her original coolant and oil pumps.  Yesterday, I noticed some oil on the lower front of the engine.  I already bought a shifter seal for the very slight oil leak on the left side.  Would the oil in front indicate a bad coolant pump or a bad oil pump?  I've heard that you do get a oil leak when the coolant pump is on the way out.  However, there has been no coolant lose or over-heating.  If it's the coolant pump, is it as easy to change (with a new O-ring) as it appears to be in the manual and isn't it the coolant pump that has to have some grease put on one of the bolts?

Valve cover leak maybe?
I've never seen a valk with an oil leak.

I believe your oil pressure sending unit is up front by the water pump.  You might check to see if it is leaking the oil. 

207k on your bike???  WOW!!!!  Congrats on the lofty ride!!!  What problems have you seen?

You must be mistaken Earl......Valkyries dont leak oil......lol..........Im thinking neither a failing water pump or a failing oil pump would cause an external oil leak.  The only oil related concern I know of with the water pump is that you must drain the engine oil before R/R of water pump and that step is not mentioned in the book.

I cleaned the area (low in front) and all around the water pump, went for a short (15 miles) ride.  Upon  reinspection, I noted a oily wetness in the cleaned area, which seemed to be coming from the center bolt coming directly out the bottom of the coolant pump housing.  Is that a clue?  I'm thinking that the pump may be good but the O-ring has gone bad, but OIL?   By-the-way, there doesn't seem to be any oil or coolant in the radiator.  Looks like I better order a new pump and the two O-rings, plus buy new antifreeze and engine oil and filter.  Anyone know how much a new pump is?

PS:  With regard to the oil pressure sending unit.  It is located to the right and above the oil filter.  All my oil leakage seems to be coming from the bottom (area) of the water pump.

Another PS!  I meant to say that I don't see any oil in the radiator, nor water in the oil.

something similar was posted a few yrs ago and it was one of the front fork seals leaking, blowing back onto the engine.

I suppose its possible that the O-ring that seals the opening into the oil part of the crank case can be failing....especially after 200+K miles.  I would say its time for a water pump assembly.  As I recall its like $100 through HDL.  Remember to drain engine oil before you start......I think that should fix you up.....even if the water pump is technically working right now, its time.....just go for it

I'll second the leaking forks, mine is right now. Just waiting on the oil to arrive... And for the temps to get back into double-digits!
