I heard of another option to remove the trunk and it was called the "threaded fender rail" instead of just cutting the notches.  Did a search, came up with zero. Any advice on the threaded option and what is it?

you cut off the mounting studs on the fender rails and drill and tap them for bolts

Cotton Mouth, just so you'll know, that method is more involved and more difficult. And, not nearly as quick to remove/reinstall the trunk mount as needed. With the method where you cut slots in the mount, you only have to loosen the nuts. With the second one you have to unbolt it unless you cut slots in the mount. Which in that case you might just as well use the first method.  cooldude

With the slots, taking it off and putting it back on is a one person job. If you had to align and screw in bolts it's most likely a two person job.
I can take mine off by myself in 5 minutes max.

Thank you all for the responses!   I will definitely be cutting the fender rail. I will post pics when I'm done, probably towards end of the year at the rate I'm going.  Cheesy

Cotton...

When you do do it, take the time to take the rails off the trunk....

Reason being,  you need to have the slots match EXACTLY on both sides and all be at the same angles...

If they are a little off you will have trouble getting the trunk to drop back on easily.... it is also alot easier to mark, cut and test fit them before you try it with a 50 lb. trunk on top.

I made a jig first to test my layout and then used that to mark and cut the actual rails.....

I also did my slots in a non standard way to hide the cuts and make less cuts...... Private me if you want to know....

Take your time and you will love the results......
I hardly ever have the trunk on, but when I do , it just takes 5-10 mins to re install....

Also, make sure to use quick disconnects for the wiring hookups.... saves time

And the missing extra 50 lb. makes a big difference in handling and airflow.....

Good luck......

Brad, funny you mention your way of doing it A couple of weeks ago, I read and came across your post from January of 2012 with your pics showing how you did it. I bookmarked  your post and look forward to doing it. I just received a Radiantz LED tail light, now just need a tail light assembly and plugs for quick disconnects.  I will pm you right before I do it. Thank you

Took my trunk off several years ago to do the "quick mount" mod. I studied it for a while now and I think the way I am going to go is cut off the rear studs and drill and tap the fender rails as you mentioned Cotton Mouth. The rear studs are bigger and it would be the easier ones to drill and tap. For the front I will leave the studs on and slot the trunk rails like Big BF. This way you have the best of both worlds and it can still be taken on and off easily by  one person. You also have the piece of mind that there holes rather than slots on one set making it unlikely that if the bolts loosend the trunk could jump off the bottom of the rear slots on a bump. The big challenge is how to have a sissy bar for the passenger when the trunk is off. The person below did a beautiful job but its beyond my skills.

problem is the slots are cut the wrong way. if they are cut rear to front , even if the bolts loosen the sissybar or trunk will not slide off.
