Out riding today, full tank of gas. Three times the bike felt like it was running out of gas. First time shortly after I left the house. Pulled over, looked it over for maybe 5 minutes, it had stalled at idle, tried to start it and it took right off. Rode maybe 20 miles to a cycle shop open house, ran perfect. Was there for maybe 2  1/2 hours, fired it up, no problem and put on around 50 miles, no problem at all. stopped for lunch, was there maybe an hour, fired up, about a mile down the road, same thing. After a cpl minutes it fired right up and went only about 2 miles this time and did it again. And again, after sitting for a cpl minutes, it started up, no problem and ran fine all the way home, maybe 20 miles. What the hell is going on? Any ideas?

Sounds similar to when the vent tube to the gas tank is plugged. If opening the gas cap immediately solves the problem then that is what it is.

After eliminating the vent tube, I guess the petcock needs a "cover set" rebuild. When the vacuum to the petcock begins to fail, it'll have your symptoms.

If you didnt recently R/R your gas tank and therefore might have a pinched vent line (that ruled out) Its time for a REAL fuel valve.

I had the tank off this winter. Maybe a pinched vent when I reinstalled it. But since I pulled it off again to check, maybe I should replace the gas valve. Which one do you guys suggest?

Check both and fix what's broke.

Sounds like the same thing that my wifes trike did on a ride last summer. 2 tears in the petcock diaphram. Rebuilt petcock. All better now.

As you say you had the tank off, check for the vent line kink or fuel line kink.  Either can cause your symptoms.

First, drive it until it the problem recurrs and vent the tank manually by opening the fuel cap slightly with you're spare key.  if it resumes power, check your Vent line.  If it doesn't improve, check your fuel feed line, it may also be kinked.

If you are sure the lines are not kinked, then troubleshoot the petcock.  Don't make the mistake of working on multiple things.  Work one at a time, isolate the problem and fix the problem.

This sounds all too familiar, As stated above could be a kinked vent tube. I fought those exact symptoms for about a year, rebuild the petcock and find a pinhole later that caused this exact problem run out of gas with 2 gallons in the tank, stop for a while it recovers and the same thing happens again. I ended up replacing the OEM Petcock with a manual golan and inline pingel filter. No problem since.

Guess I was a little unclear in the last post. I think it was just a kinked vent line, but I am also pretty sure this is the original petcock and I know I havent done any rebuilds too it. I have had the bike since '03. So i was asking, which gas valve does everyone prefer? I was wondering about putting on a Dan Marc solenoid.

I put close to 200K on MGM and never had a problem with the petcock.

I had bought a Pingle manual, and wondered why later how come I did that.

Found a Dan Marc, installed it and the Pingle.      The Dan Marc has a hidden switch for it.     Ya no turn that switch on, you only get as far as the carbs have full when ya left.      It would also solve a stolen bike situation.

The Pingle and the Dan Marc together make a very good feed for fuel, as long as ya got the safety switch on.       I know cause a couple of times I forget to turn it on, damn that ticks me off.

I may be missing something here, I usually do. Why not just go with the dan marc?

Because you need a valve to turn off the tank for removal.  No room to mount the Dan-Marc directly to the tank.

Romeo...

I had issues with the petcock a couple of times and I finally just changed the stock petcock to manual using the current parts and some JB Weld to plug the vacuum tube hole..... I think there is a thread somewhere on this

Basically you use the outside of the diaphragm as an o ring... just cut out the middle of it and discard the spring and other parts... now it just works like a non vacuum petcock that you have to turn on and off each time..... and the only cost was the JB Weld which I had already.... so $0.00 to do it.. just the time to take the tank off... you could do that right now...
I am thinking about doing the Dan Mark in the future, but now I just get in the habit of turning it off before I turn off the key.....

You could then add the Dan Mark downstream for just the cost of the solenoid... why spend more money on another petcock just to manually shut off the fuel when you need it.

Just my 2 cents....

Stock petcock, rebuild with cover set if need be.
