The dazzling high tech stuff we get on this board cannot be beat.   cooldude

You'd think that would cut down on tailgaters too.

That is one tidy garage as well.   2funny

That should be quite a sight dragging along behind the bike with lots of flames to make you visible to even the worst cagers out there.  Definitely not safety chrome, lol.

On a serious note, I'm planning a bike trip out east to include the Cherohala Skyway, dragon and such. Not yet sure if I'll be two up or not. A friend and I are riding and if my wife doesn't go, I thought of putting the tee bag on the pass seat and finding a suitable, but inexpensive gas tank for the luggage rack, just for insurance against running out. I've got several 2 gal versions of that 5 gal tank. Any suggestions? Haven't researched my options. It has just been a passing thought. Would've loved to go to the Corbin ride in, but my friend and I planned on this ride a while back. He rides a 1200 Sporty.

Before I got my belly tank I carried two, 1.5 liter fuel bottles in my saddle bag.

From KY East, there really should be no problem getting gas almost anywhere you go with a 5+ gal tank.  Topping off more often on trips is a good idea.

The Sporty with peanut tank should carry his own gas....... thou that bike probably gets 10MPG better than the Valk.  JMHO

Yeah, well often we ride together on weekends. He's right down the street in my subdivision. His range is pretty close to mine. Most of our trips are spur of the moment,  which way you wanna turn type of adventures. We often ride 4-500 miles like this on a whim. So this means that sometimes we end up making those turns to look for gas stations ,playing it safe on our fuel levels. coolsmiley  You're right have never yet, knock on wood, ran out of fuel, but have chosen to veer away from a cool road we found because we were playing it safe. Might ride the edge more if I knew I had a stop gap measure just in case.

Some years ago I bought a small 1 gal red plastic gas can I think at Home Depot and just tucked it in a corner of the hard bags, only for trips where I thought fuel was scarce = like in NW CO and other remote desert stretches in the west.  Before I got the I/S tank.  I was surprised such a small can could hold 1 gal, but it was close to a cube in dimensions.  Did a lot for peace of mind when I went on reserve 40 miles back, throttled back to 55 and still nothing but desert in front of me.  The can was plenty sturdy and didn't leak at all, not even the smell.

An empty white bleach bottle works great for carrying extra fuel! Perhaps the cheapest alternative of all.

I have to say that if you have to resort to using a bleach bottle for your gas can you are a really cheap SOB and probably shouldn't be owning let alone riding a Valkyrie.  Shocked

If you veer away from the cool road while you're on reserve, it would be hard to run out... There's gas near both
ends of the dragon, near both ends of the Cherohala... I once declined to get on the stinking highway while I was on
on reserve on the BRP passing by the Asheville exits, and got a little nervous, but I made it to Brevard... It is crowded out here in the
east... turns out that at a couple of the Asheville exits, there's gas in a block or two...

I'm all for cheap James,, I coulda been the king,,,, but that is just a recipe for disaster!! That bottle is way too thin to be bouncing and scuffing around in your bags, and the material is not optimized for petroleum products. If you think about it, you can come up with something much safer than that!!! Stick around, you got a lot of riding in front of you.

Very cool.  Graduation is always an impressive ceremony;  pointy swords and all.  cooldude

My first assignment was at nearby Maxwell AFB in Montgomery AL.

At least nobody freezes at these bases.

Remind him of something....... (this has been said for the Marines mostly, but is true for all branches)

If Uncle Sam wanted you to have a wife, they would have issued you one (at least for the first enlistment)

The other big mistake I often saw with first term enlisted was running out and buying a brand new car, with $100 down payment.  In my day, the payments were often about 80% of monthly take home (E1-2 pay is probably up a bit from those days, but is still peanuts).  Course they want a car to take the ladies out.

Yeah,  both my wife and I were Army. I only did 4 years.  I spent a year in training, then a year in Honduras, hardship tour on a Honduran Air Base, back when the Sandinista/Contra ordeal.  Left Panama during Just Cause, remember Noriega?  Went to Ft. Riley,1st Inf Div. Big Red One,which is how I got a nice tour through Iraq,Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. I had good reenlistment options, but I was newly married and knew the hardship Military life played on families. Chose to ETS.  Ended up divorced several years later anyways uglystupid2 We're on good terms and we have a wonderful son together. I would've been retired by now. Go figure, life happens right? My wonderful present wife also did one enlistment. Her 1st/late husband retired from the Army and my stepson in the Airforce and my step daughter were both born while they were in Germany. My stepson is hopeful for Japan as a 1st choice of station.

Never did a Pacific tour.

I understand Japan is as expensive as it gets, if you leave the base.
