I've pulled the tank on my 98 Tourer a few times. It's easy to avoid but needed at times.
I knew it was time for the air filter. I was surprised when after 23K my filter looked terrible.
Yes I know the interval is 12k miles my record keeping had a breakdown Sad

Why would you ever change an air filter if it didn't get dirty.  Thats exactly what a dirty air filter that is ripe for changing should look like......whats the big surprise?

just looks like you have ridden on dusty roads a few times.........  it was time to change it.

What's important is if the inside is clean.

If I pull the tank I change the filter and I try to avoid dirt roads.  It was clean inside that's a good thing somehow I missed the 12k change.

IIRC the interval on the K&N filter is 100k miles.  I've checked it many times with much less and it obviously didn't need cleaning but I did it anyway as long as I had it out.  I live on a dirt road though it's only 0.2mi before pavement.  I run mine sans prefilter and the plugs read perfect burn.  Of course we're at high altitude, 6580ft or 2.005km.  I've had my tank off probably a hundred times.  I'm not opening the air box again for a LONG time.
