(Additional question added in thread below - 5/9/13)

I'm in progress with replacing the u-joint and here's a look at the rear wheel.  The splines themselves are great, the edges have almost a sharp edge to them.  My question is how the grease has spun out from the center.  Is this normal?

Thank you in advance for any help.  This place has been a wealth of information.

Well........that looks about right for having a broken O-ring.  I think that is the spline O-ring stuck to the side of the wheel there.  That also looks like axle grease and probably a heavy application so all things considered, looks good to me.  Get new O-rings for sure

There are three o rings in the area to keep that from happening. Do a search and you will find the location of them,, one on the flange, one on the wheel and one in the final drive o ring retainer, they should be replaced at this time along with the thrust washer. All four parts are low price and can be found at HDL parts,, or the o ring set can be found on eBay,, maybe the thrust washer also. The area may have been over lubricated, but better that than not enough,,, all you have is a greasy mess,,, no damage and no wear.

I agree that is the broken flange o ring stuck to the wheel.

Thanks for the help.  I do have in my possession the three O rings as recommended elsewhere on the board.  I am keeping a picture diary of the operation, it'll just take me some time to post as I only have an hour or so each night to work on her.

Looks like your timing on this was perfect. This could have ended up badly for you.

If the thrust washer is still good, clean it off and reuse it.  Don't forget the moly paste on the thrust washer when you reassemble her.  Also, search the board for the NC shop that has the best ever deal on the 3 o-ring set(s).  Beats other sources by a landslide on price and you get multiple sets so you'll have them on hand next time.

I don't mean to bring this off topic, or in another direction, but it was mentioned about the thrust washer. I know my Valk IS had one, a very thin plastic disc.

But my 88' GW doesn't. I have also not been able to find the part in either the Valk or the GW fische. I'm trying to find out if it is missing from my bike, and if it missing will cause damage, like has been posted in the past.

It is needed!  Don't ask me how I know....

I recall a post from someone long ago who was in a pinch and needed one, so they made one out of a plastic milk jug and it got them home.

Yep bought the O-Rings and Thrust Washer from www.cheapcycleparts.com.  Here's another question - Below is the view into the swing arm drive shaft area and the drive shaft.  I know that this amount of loose grease isn't right.  Is that the oil seal that is at the pinion cup? Part number 16 in this diagram? http://www.hdlparts.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=2508621&category=Motorcycles&make=Honda&year=1999&fveh=132117  What do I need to replace here?

The good news is that the wheel dampers are worn very little.  There was little-to-no rubber dust and the metal sleeves are tight in the rubber.  I couldn't remove them by hand but the did slide out easily enough with a small screw driver.

Again, thank you for your assistance.

For that grease/oil to be that color you've had water in there. I'd take the time to check the u-joint boot for tears. Wouldn't hurt the check the final drive oil for water in it as well.

Final Drive got drained out, didn't have any moisture in it.  I haven't checked the boot but I do have a replacement for it when I bought the u-joint.  cooldude

Yes, seems that if you read the parts, you find the thrust washer. Thank you.

However, reading on my 88', no thrust washer.
http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/1988-honda-gold-wing-gl1500/o/m151628#sch22498

Also the same on the 91', which is my replacement rim.
http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/1991-honda-gold-wing-special-edition-gl1500se/o/m151582#sch22733

I wonder when the GL1500 started using them, and should I add it in my older bike? ?'s ?'s ?'s, what to do. Post in the GW forum, and see if they have any answer for this.

As for the GW, I mentioned about loosening the 4 bolts on the tube to drive, and the GW "mech" I was with had never heard of this before. Seems strange that the GL1500 was "made better" in the past, and now requires more attention.

Found that post with the missing washer, and what it did to the rear wheel.

Looking through the fische on hdlparts.com 96 GW is the first year shown with the thrust washer. Maybe be a difference in the flange depth or shoulder on the wheel.
