A friend's VTX 1800 has had the right fork rebuilt twice in less that a year. I'm suspecting the slider tube is scored or slightly bent. Can the tube be replaced without having to buy the whole lower fork assembly?

Check out hdlparts.com for the model and year. Looks to me like it can be swapped out.

Just did this last month on the Valk. Hardest part was removing the lower.  Apply heat, turn with axle, apply more heat turn more.  Once you get it turning its good but then it gets hung up on all the built up crap on the bottom of the slider.  Thats when a dead blow or rubber mallet comes in.

Young Pup: I presume the slider screws in/out. Is there a sealant that goes on the threads? How did you spin it in without warping the new slider?

I do not believe from Honda ... but you can purchase the tube from this place:

Yes

Yes. Many people have used blue lock tite with success.

There is a hole at the top of the tube. Slide a large screwdriver through this hole and start turning.  Smiley

I wrote the old slider tube off and just gave it hell with the vice to hold it. The threads are standard.  After cleaning the threads  in the lower with some brake cleaner and a tooth brush it spun on very easily with some blue loctite.
