I am going to retire in Sept. 2014 and am planning a cross country trip from Northern California to Andersonville, Georgia.  So, I have started my planning and have been looking at the Oregon Bedroll and Duluth Pack Bedroll.  Has anyone tried them or have any experience with them.  I know how to pack light since I am an experience long distance backpacker having hiked the AT in '98 and lived out of a pack for 6 1/2 months.  Most comments are appreciated.

Kinda pricey for my taste. When I'm solo I have a small cot size air mattress. I lay a tarp down then the mattress and sleeping back. With the other half of the tarp I cover myself up with. Done this many times at rallies and on the road when I dont want to put up a tent. I dont use a black tarp anymore cause a chic about pee'd on me as I was to camofladge at night.  Grin

I used a self inflating pad for years. I liked it a lot. It had an inflatable pillow though.

Seems kind of pricey. Seems like a pad and bivey sack would work at a lower cost.

The packing size says 8 inch diameter but that's without the pad.

You may have more experience with traveling light than most of us.

I have a light weight backpacking Thermarest and GoreTex bivy which I used in younger years.  Some of the advantages I see of the Oregon Bedroll is the increase volume for sleeping comfort and a way thicker sleeping pad (Thermarest Basecamp model!!).  The last cross county trip I took, I carried my solo tent and down mummy sleeping bag but they are too confining and a pain to set up and stow.  It's a different story when you are 40 miles from the nearest road and all you are doing is walking and making camp.  I think I am through with backpacking bivy sacks and all that unless I am actually backpacking.  Carry weight is not a concern on the Valkyrie.  However I will be taking my titanium cookware and alcohol stove.  They are light weight backpacking stuff that is just to compact to not take along.

Believe I am done sleeping on the ground, but I did it a lot in my youth, and I could not stand being confined in a mummy bag (yeah they pack tight).... some people can just go to sleep, I have to kick and roll around some.

If there were always going to be two solid attachment points (there won't be), I always thought one of these would be great for cross country camping.

I was wondering where you planned to bed down for the nights.
The cops around here won't let you "camp" at the rest stops.
A friend, who had been riding for eight hours, tried to get a little nap in before continuing his run.
Cop said he had to go.

I had been riding for like 12 or 13 hours and was pooped.   Officer came in the rest area, saw me on a picnic table trying to get a couple of hours of sleep.  He came over and loudly yelled hey mac, ya'll got to get out of here.

I rolled over and said, would you rather come to my fatal accident or let me get a couple hours of sleep.     He said I'll be back in 3 hours, you better be gone or you will be going to jail.

I was retired, just bought MGM, just had my zipper put in my chest, and was not fully healed.     Then he saw my Police decal on the windshield, he said have a nice sleep, I won't bother you the rest of the night.    I slept 3 hours and took off.   Stopped about 30 miles down the road for some breakfast, guess who was in there getting a donut.    He said come join me.   I did and we talked Cop stuff for about 2 hours and then he got a call.   He went one way and I went the other.

We were in Texas someplace.    As many times as I have gone East to West and visa verses, I'll be cursed if I can tell you where I am in that state.....   I rely on my GPS to get me across now.

I'll never forget 1 trip across Texas, I'd stopped in El Paso and staid with relation.   Got up around 4:00 AM, when they did, showered and had breakfast.   Like 5:30 AM I headed East for Florida.     9:00 PM that night I was still in Texas.  That was when I rode my hard-tail Harley from San Francisco to Tallahassee for Temporary Duty while in the USMC.

Most of you guys must sleep in motels/hotels.  I'm only 62 and may start to do that when I get old.   Wink
