Hey Guys....Did a complete carb clean out this weekend.  She sat up for a year or so prior to my purchase.  I didnt find a ton of crap in the carbs or bowls but did have 2 float valves stuck.  Careful negotiation got them out....

I just put everything back together (mixture screws all 2.25 out) and she will run but will not idle.  Spits and sputters.  I road it down the street and back and she struggles to stay running at low RPM.  I did notice some fuel dripping down from the overflow lines from the carbs.

Would you guys guess I have a stuck float valve again.  I do know all cylinders are firing.

Do you think ordering a rebuild kit would be the best thought....Should I step up from a 135 to a 138 Main?

Thank You for reading and I appreciate any help you can give.....

Thanks,

Steve

If you're dripping fuel from the overflow, you prolly got a stuck valve.  I'd check that before anything else.

@CA....Not sure.  I have read a few posts about jet sizes.  I did not look at the jet number when I had her apart.

@Cajunrider....I think you are right....I am going to order a rebuild kit and see if i cant get her on the road.

Thanks Guys.

I have cleaned up about 6 or 7 sets of carbs.  One set the floats were stuck and once you turned the fuel on and cranked it over, it would overflow.  After cleaning it up one side overflowed again.  Another removal and cleanup and I think the key was afterwards running some fuel through all the carbs with the drains open to flush everything out.  I also put a new screen in the tank and a petcock repair kit.  Make sure the tank is clean and that enough fuel flows through the line to flush out whatever residual trash remains.  I picked up a trick from John Schmidt and use an external tank to check to make sure there are no stuck floats before I install the carb bank.  That way you don't have to take them back out again. Did you mean to say, "Should I step up from 35 to 38's for the slow jets?"

A stuck float can often be freed by bonking on it with a dowel or handle of a screwdriver. Worth a try before tearing down everything. Just don't overdo it and break something.

+1 you might also try chemical additives to clean things up. I like Chemtool B12, a full can to your next fillup and run it all out right away.

I appreciate you guys....everyone is so very helpful.

As I said, I can get it to start with no problem but she will not idle.  It will only start under full choke....The fuel spilling out of the carbs has stopped.

Would the chemical additive be the next step you guys would take?

You can try driving it clean with heavy doses of Techron. Put a full bottle in a full tank and drive it. Let it sit and drive it some more. It could take a tank or two to open up the slow jets. The other option, and the one that I take, is to replace the slow jets with 0.035's (OEM).  Or you can bump up to 0.038's, that many like to enrichen the slow speed circuit,  and set your  mixture screws to about 1.75 instead of 2.5 turns out if you go with 0.038's.

remember: to ensure cleaning of the slow jets you need to run at low rpm then let it sit, do this a number of times. this allows your solvent to enter the low speed circuit.
