working on a 2000 interstate, I just replaced the vac lines, fuel lines, air filter and spark plugs. The bike seams to be running a lot better. I had it idling in the drive way and noticed the cooling fan is not coming on. I drove it home from the owners house aprox 70 miles but it was strait freeway so it had air moving across the engine and I never paid attention to see if the fan had came on.
Is there a way to manually check the fan motor with out taking the radiator / fan off the bike? I located the black plug in the neck that goes to the fan. I wonder if I can disconnect and add power / ground to the plug to check the fan ?

TIA Keith

This was discussed a few days ago. You can remove the wire from the sender and ground, the fan should run.
It works that way on my Tourer.

Page 4 has a thread on testing the fan.

Did you have the key turned to the on position ? The key shuts off the fan when you turn off the key.

I had an unscheduled trip down a muddy road throw mud up around the fan, would not let it turn and blew the fuse, washed it out, replaced the fuse, works fine.  Hoser  cooldude

I actually had a similar problem...I noticed when sitting in traffic idling, the idiot light would come on, but the fan wasn't kicking on.  I found that the fuse was blown.  So I put in a new fuse and then let the bike come up to temp until the light came on...still no fan.  Fuse was already blown again.  The problem was that somehow the fan or the shroud had shifted...possibly a result of hitting a deer the summer before, but who knows...anyways, the fan was hitting the shroud and wasn't able to spin.  This would blow the fuse.  So I was able to bend the shroud out of the way a little...it's a very tight fit...but the fan was able to spin and no more problems since.

Okay I checked the fuse it was blown, I put in a new fuse, I put a ground to the fan motor switch I could hear the fan like it wants to run then pops the fuse. I'll have to pull the radiator and check the motor and shroud next.

Thanks Keith

Final Update I pulled the radiator and found a couple dirt dobber nest holding the fan blade. Removed them put every thing back together and it runs great.

Thanks everyone for your help

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.
