Just did mine...replaced the o-rings, cleaned and re-packed the splines (with Honda Moly 60 paste), replaced the bearings, dust seal and the rear brake pads. (Also put a new rear tire on.) The splines looked good. The bearings had 45,000 miles on 'em, but seemed OK. Nevertheless, I figured doing some "preventative" maintenance would not be a bad thing. The brake pads were the originals and were about gone. The rotor is still in great shape.
One last thing -- I also replaced the plastic dust guard plate that is attached to the final drive assembly. (I had boogered it up the first time I removed the rear wheel and that fact had bugged me ever since.) It seems that the Honda dealer where I purchased Hildr in '08 had
not done a proper final drive service when they replaced the rear tire before putting her up for sale. (
Go figure!) That left the splines nearly dry and made it very difficult to get the wheel off when I went to replaced that same rear tire. Laser Pat was helping me at the time. When he saw the rusty looking splines come out from underneath the fender, he gasped! (I'll never forget that moment!) Anyway, we cleaned the splines up and determined that they had not been harmed by the dealer's negligence.
Hildr's rear end now gets regular maintenance and is looking
fine!
