Thinking of adding a Garmin Zumo 550 to the Valk. How do you hear the hot gps babe giving directions? ??? Don't think I want a Bluetooth hanging on the outside of my helmet, can you use an old fashioned corded earpiece set-up? Are the viewing screens good enough and the text large enough for an old fart to read the directions in the bright sunlight? coolsmiley

TIA, cooldude

For voice go to main screen then hit the tool button on the screen, then tap local, tap the lips and choose your voice. For buttons go back to tool screen and at the button you see a down arrow, tap it then you will see a keyboard, then tap it and choose large buttons. I use the bluetooth head set because I don't want to be attached to the bike in anyway. On the bike mount, on the left side you will see a flap lift it and there are two sockets one for audio out and one for mic. I hope this helps. One other thing, if you don't want bluetooth and don't want XM Radio, consider the Zumo 450 its allot cheaper and it doesn't have bluetooth and XM but the rest is the same.

SMS,

I have a Zumo 550 paired to a Scala Rider team set. I can hear voice directions directly in my helmet. Now, if you don't care about a Blue Tooth device, there is an audio output jack on the right side of the Zumo's craddle. You can use a male-male wire and connect it to the Valk audio system (as long as you have an Interstate). There is an input jack uder the RH side cover. Then, all you have to do is switch the audio system of the Valk on auxiliary and you'll hear the voice prompts in your bike's speakers. If you wish to have the audio directly in your helmet with a wired device, I guess if you connect a headset to the audio output of the Zumo, you'll be able to ear it. Never tried this, but I would be willing to bet it will work.

Hope this helps!

If your Valk is an IS then run a 3.5mm sound cable 6" long  (male to male ends) from the Zumo to the aux input under the right side cover. Load your mp3's on the Zumo, use the Aux mode and you'll get the voice over your music. I'm contemplating a cover due to glare when the sun is directly on the screen.

Thanks for your response. I wasn't real clear in my original post, Embarrassed I have a Standard, no audio on the bike. Looking for a clean and simple way of hearing the GPS. Was wondering if you could simply plug some type of earphone direct into the Garmin. Been told by J&M that I must go through an amp then to helmet.

Haven't purchased the GPS yet......maybe paper maps aren't so bad.  Grin

SMS,

As I said in my other post, I never tried to hook a set of headphones directly to the Zumo, but it sounds correct to say that you need some kind of amplification. The Zumo comes with 2 craddles, one for the bike and one for the car. The car craddle has a built-in speaker and a small amplifier in it, while the bike craddle does not have them, so I think that just hooking the headphones to it won't work. As for the paper maps, I say go for the Zumo! It is well worth every penny spent on it. Personally, I would not leave without it and return to paper maps now that I used it for a while. With the GPS, you can just listen to the voice prompts and follow your route very easily, so you can relax and enjoy the ride instead of being afraid to take the wrong way and get lost. Plus, if ever you miss a turn, the unit will automatically calculate a route to bring you back on the right path... A paper map won't do this for you!  Wink

Hi,
You might find this link helpful, a small preamp which can be used with a regular headset.
I run my Garmin 680 through a Y cable to my J&M and also to one of these units which connects to my powered speakers
It lets me adjust the volume independently of the J&M.

Shouldn't there be a preamp built into the J&M for the headset.?
For what they charge there should be 5.1 surround sound.

Yes the J&M has its own built in amp and volume control.
You can use this unit to power a regular set of headphones.
I use it when I listen to the mp3's loaded into the Garmin
and played through my powered Rumbleroads.
Sounds better than the headset at lower speeds.
