I posted a message a week ago on how the bike won't stay running,  ( I know I should continue thread, but don't know how ) As stated before, bike starts fine, runs good for about a mile or so and then acts like i'am running out of fuel, this condition comes on faster if i get on hyway and take her up to 70, then it will only run less than a mile when it starts to sputter. It has to be a fuel supply problem ?? So heres where i'am now, I took the tank off, put a piece of hose from tank to empty gas can . then put a piece of hose onto vacuum tit on petcock. I wanted to see if i could get gas to run out of tank, but i could not create enough vacuum to make it work. tomorrow will take to mecanic freind who has vacuum pump at his shop. I think it could be fuel valve / petcock problem.  Do you think i'am on the rite track ??  Also, with petcock turned off no fuel would run out of 3/8 hose. but on , on or reserve it it would drip drip drip rather quickly. which tells me why bike would start up and run after sitting for a while, till i ran the carbs dry again. So 2 questions, should any fuel be running out when there is no vacuum going to petcock ??? and how much vaccuum is needed to open diaphragm ??

I want to get back on the road, so any info helps

Thank you dlm jr vrss 2838

If you go back to your previous message click reply and add your update it gets moved to the top of the list.

Fuel shouldn't run without vaccum.

I didn't go to the original post, but, with the problem you're having I'd say [ and probably already have] that you have a fuel delivery issue. Shouldn't be hard to fix. If the tank has been off the bike then the vent line is probably kinked [ common]. If the original type vacuum petcock is being used then the diaphram has probably failed requiring a rebuild or the #6 cylinder vacuum line to the petcock is bad.

You need to have the petcock rebuilt.  Only a small amount of vacuum is required to operate it.

I called him and he said the tank is off the bike. When the petcock is off nothing comes out. When it is in the on OR the reserve position, gas drips out without having a vacuum hooked to it.  Sound like a bad diaphragm?

Yes, with the dripping when no vacum, sounds like a rebuild in order.

But he said he placed a line onto the petcock tit, and tried to apply enough vacum to make the petcock open.

But what he did not say was that he removed the attached vacum line (from #6 carb) and added a manual vacum line.

Maybe he added the vacum line to the bottom of the petcock, the drip hole, and not to the vacum.

Still he needs to find out way it drips with no vacum.

Maybe the ball indent isn't indexing properly, and the fuel is not properly turned on or off.

Again, I agree something is wrong, but there is a little more testing that can be verified. I like to know what is wrong before I try to fix something, so I know it is being fixed, and not just parts thrown at a sympton, which I do do also, but if i know, then I also know the problem is fixed, and wont happen again.

Everything points to needing to install the "cover set" rebuild kit, or replacing the whole valve.  Both will work.  Anything else is a waste of effort.

To reply to the same thread all you have to do is click on the button that says reply. It is a little right of center just above your first post or at the bottom of the last post in the thread.

After looking back through your old posts.....Is this the same petcock that you rebuilt in 2011?    Did the bike ever run right between then and now? Maybe it wasn't reassembled correctly?
Here is a diagram of how it goes together. Use the stock setup one at the top and disregard the one on the bottom.
