I know this might get moved, but I don't frequent the General Board, only the Tech, so it was nice hearing about this.

Ouch... I love working with big machines, but we're no match for them. Jeff makes
concrete counter tops, I guess that's what he was doing. I guess he'll tell us
what kind/size of mixer he was working with... heal up soon Jeff!

My good friend Earl put it out there....I wasnt going to say much yet.....its hard to type left handed.

Yes, I am making the countertop for that nice new cabinet I posted about last week.  No I wasnt wearing a helmet or much protective clothing whatsoever.  My shorts and shirt were cut off immediately and I spent the next two days butt nekkie in the hospital because I couldnt get the gown on....broken wrist and dislocated elbow...closed injuries and closed reductions.

OK, stop reading here if you are squeemish!

Its a 3 cu ft electric mixer.  I was all done with the pour, just cleaning the mixer.  mixer running and using a hose to wash the residual concrete off.  There was one stubborn clump that just wouldn't get off so I thought I would just knock it off with my  hand.  That was a bad idea.

The instant I got my hand near the mixing blade its like it reached out and grabbed me wrist.  I was stuck hard!  Three (maybe 2) seconds later, I heard and felt my wrist bone (ulna) snap.

So, this is bad, may arm is fixin to move in ways it is not supposed to, I could not reach the off button.  I dont know how I did it but in a single leap, I was up on top of the spinning barrel holding on for dear life and trying to free my stuck wrist.  Shortly after cresting the top of the rotation the mixer fell over...snapped wrist and hand still stuck, STILL HOLING ON.  I went for one more full rotation while the mixer was laying on the ground.  As soon as I could recover from being drug under the barrel I knew I had to step it up and get free.  Suddenly the tension went out of my arm and my hand slipped out and I was free!  I figure that tension release was when the elbow dislocated.

I made up the steps to the back door to inform Judy we would be making a trip to the ER and then I promptly passed out.

Just got back from Eglin hospital they took more exrays...all looks good, no surgery needed, and I got a real cast........

8 weeks or so and Ill be as good as new.

I give God the glory for a successful leap onto a wet moving mixer.  There had to be an angel holding me onto the side......if I had let go at any time or fell off.............I cannot even go there in my head what would have surly happened!

Thanks for all the prayers and good thoughts...I will ride the Valkyrie in 2 months time...

Thanks to Earl and Danny for helping me get the gas stabilized so it will start after I heal up.

Jeff-I drove a 10 yard concrete mixer for right at 2 years. Those little portable ones are more dangerous than what I was driving. AND I know you know this BUT that clump stuck in the mixing drum-part of the REASON they make a handy dandy tool in various sizes called a hammer. Get yerself better and please be careful man.  cooldude And when you can-RIDE SAFE.

As a former OSHA Safety Officer, I'm here to tell ya, I've heard it more than once.   Done it before and never had a problem.   Those things are dangerous, we all know it and yet, we all take chances we know we shouldn't.   Don't get me wrong, I know from my own screw ups.  Experience is the best teacher.   I have a high school friend that lost both arms up to his elbows cause he didn't like wearing the safety restraints his machine required.   His wife has to go to the rest room with him so he can pee.

Please be careful.  I know you won't do this again but, it's like measuring twice and cutting once.   Think, use that pumpkin the lord gave us on the top of our necks.   Some things just ain't worth the risk.   Glad you're on the road to healing.   Take care.

Chris, I'm visiting Carl in the hospital right now and just read him your story.  He wants me to pass on to you that he's very sorry this happened to you and that he made me quit reading at the point of your warning because he is, indeed, that squeamish.

Very glad to hear you're going to fully recover.

I have a female friend that had a washing machine with a faulty cut off. You know the one that cuts power if you open the machine whilst in operation.

Anywho.

She heard it banging around due to the contents being off balance. Lifted the lid and reached in to redistribute the load as the machine was slowing. One of the items of clothing wrappd around her hand and POP her wrist twisted and busted. She told me she was lucky in that she pulled her arm out before more damage was done.

She got the cut off switch fixed straight away.  Shocked

Sorry to hear about this Jeff.  I had an experience with a chipper vac and getting a finger sewn back on, myself.  Only took one second to screw up.  Reliving the event, and my mistake just made me angry, so I quit.

The fact there was no need for any hardware in the repair is good news.  I hope you heal up with no residual issue.

Good thing you had the presence of mind to jump on top. Was doing concrete work this past weekend and almost did the same thing. Luckily it just grazed my hand and I realized this is probably not a good idea. It seems no matter how much age and experience we have it only takes 1 slight lapse of judgement to really screw things up. Glad you're gonna be ok.
