How do I know when I need to replace my U-joint? Bike has 98,500 mile on it (standard) have some play in drive line and yes I have replaced the dampners in the rear wheel.

I does not need replaced until broken... or breaking.

Most begin to feel (intermittent) clunks in the pegs, maybe some grinding noise (thou this can be the left rear wheel bearing failing as well).

You can always do a little bit of throttle blipping in 1st or 2d gear to get a feel for driveline slop (which we all have to some degree), but you are trying to see if you have any clunking or grinding.

Having a new Ujoint on hand is a good idea.

I change things on my bike when I feel like Ive gotten enough use from them and isn't an issue to warrant breaking down over . I replaced my water pump , alternator, and clutch at 90k just because . There were no failures I just felt after 15 years I had gotten plenty of use for my $ . I replaced my ujoint and dampers this year for the same reason . Preventative maintenance isn't just oil changes .

I too would suggest having one on hand and then giving the joint a good look the next time you do the rear maintenance.

You might jack the rear tire off the ground with the tranny in 1st gear. Gently roll the tire back and forth while listening for a clank from around the u-joint area and check for any slop in the driveline.

Thanks.  I do have alot of slop in the drive line. When riding in 5th gear and slow down to around 2000rpms I can realy feel the slop.

It's easy enough to pull the rubber cover back and look at the u-joint.

Any slop will be readily viewable as will any other problems with the u-joint.

I think 100,000 miles is good enough.  Order a new one.  Unless you do "hole shot" starts all the time or like heavy downshifts on a regular basis the clutch should do 200,000 easy.

Dennis:  Thanks for the offer, but I'm going to try and do this with my son-in-law. I think it will be a good oppertunity to spend time with him. He is a good guy.

Typical amount of free play (slop) in the drive train is about 1.5 inches of tire travel in fifth gear, and if you can hear a clunk in your ujoint.....its way too late to be riding it...ya need to be replacing it.
