Does installing a K & N air filter improve performance and or fuel mileage??

All other things being equal (tune, etc), you might get one additional horse.  Mileage, I don't think so.

I got a noticeable difference , with the K&N and washers under the front of the gas tank to raise it up! Money well spent for me!

Seems to be same performance with a K&N as the OEM air filter. Butt dyno measurements you know.  2funny

no , but it does let in lots of wear causing dirt. my bike has dyno' d 100 hp with oem filter. oem is a high flow high filtration filter, it provides all the air the engine needs.

the K&N plugged up nearly 3 times faster, passed 18 times more dirt and captured 37% less dirt. See the data tables for a complete summary of these comparisons.
actual air filter ISO testing.

I think at higher elevations you will see some improvements.  I live at three thousand feet and frequently ride at up to six thousand feet and run my K&N without the pre-filter.

I also run a K&N without the pre-filter on my 2003. I live at 5100' and at higher elevations and my butt dyno says it runs better with the K&N. YMMV

I ain't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but how can a filter plug up 3 times faster while passing 18 times the dirt? Think about it.  Are you SURE this was an unbiased test? I'll continue to run my K&N. I'll just have to stop more often and let all the bags of dirt out of the exhaust pipes!

did u read the test?
at the begining of the test is when most of the dirt goes through while at the same time some particles are caught and then more until it is clogged. K&N always used the old SAE test in their advertising  showing how efficient it was at the end of the test whereas it was almost clogged and filtering out a lot of the dirt. what they didn't tell was HOW much dirt passed at the beginning of the test. study the testing. the dirt that passes goes pass your rings into the oil not your exhasut pipes.

Yep, looked at the test and read the results, where K&N was rated dead last. And they used a really fancy---and expensive machine to analyze the results. I'm thinking you should get these results IMMEDIATELY to the NHRA, Nascar, IRL, and F1. They all have a lot of cars that run K&N filters with great success. I'm baffled how a company that produces such a crappy filter does so well....

I had a K&N and could not tell any difference. I went back to stock because I had rather replace it than clean it.

and oem lasts much much longer than 12k miles, unless one rides on dirt roads exclusively.
