Knew my memory would let me down eventually!

Been working on my Valkyrie rebuild over the past year and am in the process of putting things back together in preparation for reinstalling the freshly painted body pieces. Recently finished the hydrolock repair and successfully reinstalled the engine, cooling system and all other associated components.
Got to putting the battery box back in and found four bolts inside. Two are brass colored, the other two silver. There are also two metal collars. The brass bolts appear to be regular bolts with lock washers on them while the other two are a one-piece bolt with a fixed unthreaded collar under the head. I looked at the parts fiche on HDLparts.com and it appears the two silver bolts with the fixed collar are used at the back of the battery box to attach to the rear fender. The other two bolts hold the battery box to the frame of the bike. What I can't figure out is where the two metal collars go. Looking at the fiche they appear to be used with the bolts attaching the battery box to the frame but they don't seem to fit anywhere or have a use there. Can't see how they'd work with the rear fender as the bolts there have built in collars. Anybody know where they might go?
Found a few pictures on this forum of the battery box mounting bolts and there is no collar on them that I can see.

Half way down this post
http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,11630.0.html
here is a picture of the bolts holding the battery box to the frame. This is how mine looks but there doesn't appear to be any collars attached to the bolts. For the life of me I can't figure out where they came from although the parts fiche for the battery box shows them with these bolts.

I don't know about the collars but being brass maybe they are the bolts that hold the wires to the battery?
If not, try to assemble things a few more steps and you will see where they go.
I spent a few hours the other day looking for a part for a 12 HP Briggs that holds the oil filler tube to the side of the motor. Right about the time I gave up and was cleaning up I found it in my oil drain pan. Then I remembered...Oh yea I saw that fall in there two weeks ago when I was taking it apart.

I know that can be frustrating. Are they by chance the ones that go through the bolt holes for the center cover? Maybe you removed that center cover around the same time as the battery box and put the collars inside the battery box. Good luck!!

Hey,, 1500Rider..... that is the only thing you couldn't remember where it goes????? Your doing GOOD. Those two collars go in the front mounting holes of the battery box, there is a support strap that wraps around the front of the box ang goes on the outside, the collars go into the holes from the INSIDE, so there is metal support for the plastic mounting on all sides.

Hey, thanks Pancho – you nailed it. I had considered that they had something to do with the battery box but after mounting it without them, I didn't think they were necessary there as the plastic of the battery box is right up against the metal of the frame. Tried installing them as you suggested and they fit.
Thanks for the other suggestions everyone. Ruled those out as the battery bolts were still in the battery and the collars for the centre cover are still on the bolts mounted in the frame for safe keeping. When I originally took the bike apart in May 2012 it was my intention to have it back on the road within two months. Here I sit 13 months later and still working on it! Big delays have been caused by problems with several painters. Finally found an excellent, reputable painter back in February and thought I had it beat with an expected delivery of April 15. Sad to say the guy ended up in the hospital and put the project back a few weeks. Heard from him tonight and he claims it will be done next weekend. I can only hope. Fortunately the delay allowed me to tackle some other work on the bike. As long as the paint gets done soon, should be on the road by July.
A big thanks to everyone on this forum for their past and continuing support since the project began. Couldn't have done it without you!
