With the engine running or not?

Also just reading the voltage of a sitting battery doesn't tell much, the battery needs to be tested under a load.

A battery should put out 12.6 volts just sitting there, 11 volts is a pretty dead battery.

Thanks guys,   I wasn't mine, but for a friends son.  I called a buddy and he told me check it under load.  Turned out to be < 8, so off to the store he goes.

I'm the first to admit, when it comes to electrical stuff, I'm a dummy and I'm calling someone else uglystupid2 uglystupid2

Put a TRICKLE charger on a new battery. DO NOT try to charge it up with the altenator on the vehicle. The battery will live longer. There should be directions with the new battery. Read and heed-don't throw them away til yer done.  2funny RIDE SAFE.

I just bought a new Yuasa ytx14-bs battery I believe is correct number early April on Amazon.com for like 60 bucks new is 85 dollar battery.  They had them on sale still think they are under 70 bucks still a great deal with free shipping.  Trickle charge the acid pack once put in for like 4-6 hours on 1 to 1.5 amp battery charger before install on cycle.

My battery tested out as 12.3-12.4 volts so was at 70% charge when fully charged at best after 5 years use and knew it was on the last leg at beginning of season and was hoping it would last another year.  I tried 2nd ride of spring cranking it over and would whir, whir, whir like a dying battery when attempted to push starter button so gave up and replaced wasn't worth the hastle of charging it up hoping it will not strand me somewhere which I am sure it would have this year.

Anything under 12.2 volts my recommendation would be to replace as soon as possible.
